You're walking down the street, hand in hand with your long term boyfriend, Calum. There's a warm breeze in the air and the streets are busy with families with young children, young couples and many teenagers, due to this being one of the busier parts of town. You look up at your boyfriend, who notices you glance at him, and smiles down at you, kissing your forehead as you continue to walk. There is silence between you, not the awkward, uncomfortable kind. Its more the settled, beautiful kind. After all silence speaks a thousand words, and sometimes you two don't need to be constantly exchanging conversation, as you're happy in each others presence and that's enough for you.
"I have an idea, here me out okay?" Calum asks suddenly, ruining the blissful silence. Due to the last part of his sentence, you was already doubtful about what his "idea" was going to be, you prayed it wasn't idiotic. Its not that you didn't mind telling him he was being an idiot, but when he pouts out his bottom lip and widens those big brown eyes of his, you cant help but give in to his puppy dog face. Its like kicking Elmo if you don't. You nod and he continues.
"What do you say about us getting matching tattoos? Right now?" He asks animatedly, you can tell from his tone of voice that he's extremely excited about this idea, and you cant help but agree that its probably one of his better ones. You both already have tattoos, but not relating to one another, so to do this will be special to the two of you.
"Lets go then" you reply, widening your smile to him. You both rush towards the local tattoo parlour in your area and enter the dirty, black and white building. Inside is a large juxtaposition to the outside of the building. Inside is clean, neat and tidy. The walls are covered in different pieces of art work, stencils and customers completed tattoos. You are immediately attracted to a small tattoo on the wall in the bottom corner, so small and hidden you almost missed it, but you must have noticed it for a reason. This, this is the tattoo you will be sharing with Calum.
"Cal, look at this" you interrupt him talking to the tattoo artist, he walks over to you and bends down to inspect the stencil, you add "what do you say to getting this? I get Yin, the dark, feminine side of the symbol and you get Yang, the light, masculine side. That way, its a symbol on its own, but when its together its completed, just like us."
He looks at the stencil for a few more minutes, you begin to think you're idea and reasoning is bad until he stands back up to his full height, slightly towering over you, a smile stretched out across his face.
"I think its a great idea, babe." He kisses your forehead lightly, grabbing your hand to take you over to the artist, describing the stencil you had just seen and where you wanted it tattooing on your wrists.
As you both leave the parlour, a little under an hour later, you cant help but keep on glancing down at the dressing on your wrist, with a stupid smile on your face. You look up to Calum whose expression is similar to that of yours. All you think about on your walk home with Calum is how perfect your matching tattoos are, they are their own meanings and symbols when they're apart, but are completed and perfect when they are together. Just like you and Calum. You are Yin, he is Yang. You have meaning, both together and apart.
