You smile happily as you hear the registrar announce "I do" and the congregation cheer as a sweet and simple kiss is shared. You feel a warm bubble of giddiness in your chest, almost to the point of bursting, as you look over at Calum next to you. He smiles warmly at you as you both clap the newlyweds at the altar.
You knew the couple briefly, the bride being his cousin, and Calum had asked you to be his date for the day so as to not be alone. He had expressed clearly that the pair of you would be attending as friends, nothing more. A thought that deflated that little bubble of happiness inside of you slightly. Shaking your head to rid you of these thoughts, you looked at the couple as they walked down the aisle and left through the venue doors to have confetti and rice thrown over their heads in celebration.
"We should head over to the reception venue now, so as to miss all of the traffic attempting to leave here." Calum chuckles in your ear, his close proximity reasoned because of the loud noise from the wedding party.
You nod your head and begin to approach the stairs at the foot of the building, Calum offering you his arm to assist you in getting down them in your heels. At the bottom of the stairs you giggle lightly, thanking Calum for helping you, and you see a light pink hue appear on his cheeks. Shrugging it off as nothing, just Calum being the gentleman that he is, you both walk over to his car, climb in, and head off for the next venue to celebrate the union of the couple.
The day goes by quickly. An expensive meal is attended by a hundred or so of the couples family and friends and the day suddenly turns to night, even more of the couples friends turning up to celebrate into the evening. You stayed by Calum nearly the entire time, not knowing any of the other guests apart from his parents.
At one point, you travelled over to the bar to grab a drink, and was approached by a friend of the groom who you began chatting with. Calum must have seen you from across the room, because no more than a minute later, you felt a warm arm wrap around you waist and pulling you close into his side. As you look up at him, you notice he's smiling and talking to the male opposite of you, and it's almost as if he did the gesture absent-mindedly as he continues to converse not looking at you at all.
He bids the guy farewell, pulling you by your hand to go outside, the cool night air surrounding you instantly and he lets go of your hand, the skin warm and tingling from his touch. He begins a slow walk, waiting for you to catch up to him, and you slowly walk through the star lit gardens of the venue.
"Do you ever think you'll get married?"
His deep voice breaks through the calm silence the pair of you was revelling in. His question takes you off guard momentarily, not knowing how to answer it because you don't really know yourself.
"I don't know, maybe. I don't think it depends on what I want now though, more so who I'm with at the time. If I'm in love, if I'm happy, if I see a future worth any heart break. Then, I guess it's a yes."
He slowly nods, his hands in his suit trousers as the pair of you walk, and you look over at him as his eyes are trained on the ground.
"What about you? Do you see yourself getting married?" You ask apprehensively. You don't want to know the answer, hearing him say yes and describe his perfect bride which isn't you, will leave you devastated.
"I'm the same really. Except, I think I've found the person I'm supposed to be happy with and have a future with. I'm already in love with her so that's one thing off of the list."
He stops and looks at you, a sad smile on his face. Your mood instantly shifts, sadness and regret filling you, and you don't know what to say to him.
"That's lovely. Who is she?"
You can't help but feel the jealousy course through your veins as his eyes lit up and he opens his mouth to tell you about the girl he is in love with.
"She's brilliant. She's smart, beautiful and funny. Everything every guy wants to find in a girl, but she doesn't see that and I do. When I'm with her it's like I'm on cloud 9, she makes me feel invincible and I could do anything in the world, even the most impossible of things. I'm truly in love with her and she has no idea."
At the end of his short speech about this amazing girl, you feel sad and happy at the same time looking at the smile on his face. Sad because he's in love with someone when you're in love with him, yet happy because he has found the girl he wants to spend the rest of his life with.
"Then you should tell her, Calum. Be happy, with her not without her, if she makes you feel this way then she ought to know." You smile at him and he nods determined to do the right thing.
"You're right." He takes a deep breath, looks up to the sky then back at you, before continuing. "I'm in love with you, Y/N."
His words take you off guard, not expecting what you had always wanted to hear from him. You stand there, mouth open in shock at his confession to you, the smile beginning to fall from his face after you don't reply for a few minutes.
"You didn't want to hear that." He states sadly, his eyes flickering between you and the ground, almost debating whether to leave or not.
"No, I did." His head snaps back up to look at you, the shock now written on his features instead of yours. "I've loved you for a very long time, Calum Hood. I was just too scared to tell you. You're my future."
