All you can hear is the waves crashing against the rocks through the cold night air. You're sat on some rockery around the edge of the coast, just staring out into the dark horizon, thinking about anything and everything. You take in a deep breath of the salty air, before exhaling it into the night, wishing you could do the same with all of your worries.
"Y/N" A male voice calls your name from behind you, startling you. Your best friend Calum is slowly making his way over to you, you begin to wonder what he is doing here, how did he know this is where you'd be, you hadn't told anyone before setting off. "You always come here" He answers your unasked question, almost as if he could read your mind. "I went round to your house and your mum said you'd been quiet since you got in, then left without a word. She was worried, so I came looking for you to ease her mind. You don't have to but you can talk if you want."
He gently sits down next to you, not quite touching you, and crosses his legs, leaning his forearms on top of his thighs. Your gaze drifts from him to the shore in front of you both, from your peripheral vision, you see him mimic your actions. You're both sat there in pure silence, with nothing but the waves and your breathing being heard by the two of you.
"He said he wanted to see other people." You whisper out to him, hoping he doesn't hear you over the sounds of the water below you. Your eyes immediately begin to water, you inhale a large breath in the hopes it prevents them from leaking over the edge, but you fail and one escapes, slowly making its way down your cheek. You raise a hand to quickly wipe it from your face, not wanting to waste your tears on someone who isn't worth them.
"I'm sorry" Calum whispers back to you, he's looking at you now with pity etched into his features and you begin to roughly shake your head.
"No, don't feel sorry for me. That's the last thing I want. I knew he would do this, so many people warned me, you warned me, that one girl isn't good enough for him and he would break my heart, but I didn't listen because I loved him, I thought I loved him." You angrily throw at him before standing to your feet, making your move to leave so that you can wallow in your own self pity once again, this time without an audience. However, you're prevented from moving any further when Calum's hand catches your wrist. You abruptly turn around to be met with a saddened looking Calum.
"I'm not apologising because I feel sorry for you, which I do, but that's not what I'm apologising for. I'm apologising because that jackass hurt you and I didn't know, therefore I haven't been to kick his ass yet." He says to you with a serious tone laced with small amounts of anger. "You don't deserve what he did to you, Y/N. No girl does. We're not all like that though, I promise, some of us are good guys we just need to be found. I'm sorry he didn't turn out to be the guy you wanted him to be, but you'll find yours in time, I know you will. You might even already know him." Towards the end of his speech, his tone becomes light and joking. You look up into his dark brown eyes and see them lit up with adoration even in the darkness of your setting.
His face is holding its usual cheeky grin, that wasn't there previously, but has now made its way onto his beautiful face. Your face is void of emotion, but the inside of you isn't. Your heart beat has picked up so that the blood is rushing through your body at a faster pace than usual, so fast that you can hear it in your ears, along with the waves.
Even though Calum is joking about your perfect guy being in front of you, you cant help but think about your feelings for him all over again. He doesn't know that you started having a crush on him 3 years ago, or that that crush turned into loving him, which in turn meant you fell in love with him. The only problem being, that Calum didn't catch you. So you began seeing other people instead, in the hopes your feelings would die down. But they didn't. So here you are, late at night, on the coast with your best friend and you know you cant deny anything you feel for him anymore, because you'd be lying to yourself.
"I do already know him." Calum's brow furrows at your suddenly loud and confident voice, you maintain eye contact with him, not wanting to chicken out at the last minute and stop your confession. "Its you" At this, Calum's hand drops from your wrist and even though he's beginning to distance himself from you, you cant stop now, the adrenaline from your declaration running through your veins, spurring you on. "I've been in love with you for almost 2 years Calum, I've seen you date other girls just like you've seen me date other guys. And it killed me inside, when I saw you smiling with them and having your arm wrapped around them, protecting them and telling them that you loved them. That it wasn't me wrapped in your arms, it wasn't me you was protecting, it wasn't me who caused you to smile like it was the first time you'd seen the sunrise. I wasn't the one that you told you loved." By now tears are streaming down your face, you're still looking at Calum, waiting for some sort of reaction from him. But he remains stood there, not moving apart from the gentle rise and fall of his chest with every breath he takes.
He's just staring at you wide eyed and that's when you realise what a huge mistake you just made. You've made yourself look like a complete idiot, declaring your undying love for your best friend, when he doesn't feel the same way. It feels like someone's literally ripped your heart from your chest, because of the heart break and rejection you're feeling. No scratch that, someone's ripped it out, threw it on the floor, before repeatedly stomping on it whilst you stand there and watch them do it.
"I'm sorry, ill just go" You stutter your words out and quickly wipe your tears from your eyes. You turn to leave again and he grabs your wrist, just like moments before. However, you don't turn around, he pulls you back and spins you around to face him. His actions are quick, his hand raising to cradle your face as he crashes his lips onto yours, with a similar force to that of the waves below you. You immediately kiss him back, eager to feel his lips on yours after so many years of dreaming about what it would be like. Its filled with every ounce of passion you had hoped for, so strong that you felt you could take on the world with it. You slowly break away, the pair of you breathless and he presses his forehead against yours.
"I've always wanted to do that" He whispers to you as a smile breaks out across his face, yours mirroring his. "I love you, Y/N. Always have, always will" He whispers against your lips, as he leans down for another kiss. This one being short and sweet, but still leaves you craving more. "Please, let me be your good guy? I promise to protect you from all evils, I promise to make you smile so bright you could light up the darkest of rooms. Just give me a chance and I promise to love you with every fibre of my being." His voice never once raises, just remains low and passionate throughout his speech, almost as if he's begging you. But he doesn't need to. You nod rapidly, agreeing to the best thing that could have ever happened to you.
You fell in love with your best friend and this whole time you thought he didn't catch you, when you was actually still in the free fall and he was waiting at the bottom with open arms.
