"Why do the people we love, hurt us the most?" You ask aloud. You're standing on the porch of your house with Ashton. The sky dark and starless, the only light coming from the moon. He doesn't say anything, just remains standing there staring at the sky. You can see him out of your peripheral and you wait quietly for him to reply. He always has something to say about your relationships, yet now he doesn't. "I know you're dying to say something Ashton, so get it over with. Don't spare me my feelings."

He exhales his breath out in a huff, clearly preparing himself for what he's going to say to you. You turn to face him, awaiting his judgement and 'I told you so'. The cold air nips at your skin, making you pull the sleeves of your jumper over your hands and cross your arms over your chest to conceal in the warmth.

"I'm sorry." The first words from his mouth are not what you expected. No judgement, no 'I told you so', no wanting to be right. He remains silent after his quiet, sympathetic apology and this is something you don't want him to feel. You don't want him to feel pity towards you, especially when he warned you again and again about the guys you dated and how wrong for you they are.

"Why are you apologising? You didn't break my heart." You whisper to him, he turns to face you with commiseration written across his face, his hazel eyes sad as they look you over. You shake your head defiantly at him, refusing to accept an apology from him when he's not to blame for anything.

"I could have helped prevent it though." His voice ever raising, always staying sad yet somewhat calm. You thought he was going to be arrogant and rub it in your face at the fact your relationship ended the way he had anticipated it, yet he was full of understanding and sympathy for you and it was beginning to get on your nerves.

"How, Ashton? You can't protect me from everything." Your voice coming out as a light growl, you're beginning to become irritated at how he's not reacting the way you was expecting him to and how he was blaming himself.

"No, you're right. I can't protect you from everything Y/N, but I can sure as hell try." Finally, he's beginning to show another emotion other than pity. His voice raises slightly, trying to match yours in volume and he succeeds. "I warned you about him, yet you still went there Y/N!"

"It was about time you got round to the 'I told you so', I'm surprised it didn't come first if I'm being completely honest." You state to him, lowering your voice to refrain from having an argument with your friend.

"I did tell you so, Y/N. I repeatedly told you he was an ass, that he hurts girls and uses them before throwing them away like they meant nothing to him. I only stopped warning you because you was becoming sick of what I was saying and I thought I was going to lose my friend to him and his selfish ways, so I dropped it so that I could be here for you when the inevitable happened." His words start off angry and quick, before slowing down and just being frustrated at your lack of understanding.

You stand there and listen to his words, not once trying to interrupt him so that he can blame everything on you. His gaze is constantly fixated on you and you see the anger die down in his eyes, them lighting and reflecting the moon as opposed to moments before when they were darkened from his anger.

"So many times I warned you, yet you let him use you repeatedly and he got what he wanted. You, broken and hurt and I'm having to clean up the damn mess, as always." He growls, igniting more anger within you.

"Are you finished?" You ask, before he can even reply you continue with what you're saying, wanting to get your anger out at him. "Good, now its my turn." You unfold your arms, placing them down by your sides and clenching your hands into fists. "Yes, you warned me and I chose not to listen but that's because I was falling for someone, Ashton. It happens, we make mistakes and he was one of mine but I'll get over that. However, you making me feel like I'm a burden to you is not how this is supposed to be. Yeah, you help me get over him because you're my friend, but don't make it out as if you have to help me all the time, like I'm some damsel in distress and you're my knight in shining armour. I don't need one of those and I certainly don't want one." You shout at him, your frustration taking over you. You can feel your throat burning from how loud you was shouting at him. He remains stoic the entire time, not even flinching when you stepped closer to him and began yelling in his face.

You're barely a foot apart from one another now and you can see the different fractions of colour in his irises, you see his eyes flicker down to your mouth before quickly averting back to your eyes. Just as you're about to speak again, he grabs your waist and roughly pulls your body towards him, forcing his lips onto your slightly parted ones. It takes you a moment to respond, but you do so passionately, parting your lips when his tongue gently strokes your bottom lip.

Your hands wrap around his neck, your fingers going into his hair and playing with the small curls at the nape of his neck. With both of your breaths becoming heavy, you try your hardest not to pull away as the pads of his thumbs rub your hip bones in a soothing manner. Ashton is first to pull away, staying as close as he possibly can against you, causing your noses to brush as he rests his forehead against yours. Your eyes lock again, Ashton wearing a timid smile as you both try to regain your breath.

Inhaling deeply, you close your eyes for a moment before reopening them to see hazel eyes still in your sight. Neither of you speak, not wanting to ruin the moment with your words but you know what you wanted to say. It wasn't an 'I love you', it was an 'I need you' and you needed Ashton more than you'd needed anyone in your life. You needed him to be that knight in shining armour when you was the damsel in distress and you needed him to love you in the way that you had always wanted him to.
