Lionel took me outside and started instructing me on how to hold the dagger properly.

"Keep your fingers like this," he said, using his hand to position my fingers correctly.

"Try to stab something," he encouraged.

I made a face at his wording. "Uhmmm, okay. I'll try."

I awkwardly tried slashing at the air in front of me, mimicking things I'd seen before in movies and TV shows.

"How's that?" I asked.

"It's..." Lionel paused. "It's okay, I guess. I mean, obviously you need a lot more practice. How does it feel?"

I contemplated it for a few seconds, twisting the dagger around in my hands.

"I'm guessing it's probably the lightest weapon out of all the ones I'm going to try today," I said, "But I'm not sure if I like it that much. I wanna try the other ones first."

"Hold on, let's go see if there are any training dummies we can use as a target," Lionel suggested, and led us both to another open clearing.

"The other knights are sparring with each other, so there should be plenty of dummies available," he told me.

I stood in front of one of them, and attempted to use the dagger again, lunging forward and puncturing through the 'stomach'. However, I lost my balance and nearly tripped headfirst into the dummy.

"Oops, I think that's enough with the dagger," I said, awkwardly dusting myself off.

Lionel rolled his eyes, but handed me the wooden sword. He unsheathed his own to show me proper stance and hand positioning.

"Hold like this, and swing it this way towards the target." He moved slowly, making sure I could see how his feet and arms were moving together.

I mimicked his actions a few more times, Lionel fixing my errors after each attempt, before he told me to speed up.

"Do it faster now, towards the dummy."

I thwacked my sword against the side of the dummy in the same movements, repeating the movements over and over.

"That wasn't too bad," I said, after dropping the sword. "I think I like it more than the dagger, it's a bit less awkward for me to hold."

"I knew you'd like it more!" Lionel announced triumphantly. "Let's try some other close range weapons next!"
