Zane's POV

I looked around confused.

"What happened? How did I get here?" I asked. The last thing I remember was leaving to get some fire wood.

"Long story, but the short version is that you got hacked by Pythor, and we came here to save you, but in order to do that I had to create a distraction, and now Hebi's about to get seriously hurt," Molly said. I blinked as I attempted to process the information.

"That.... Is a lot."

"And that's not even the beginning of it. But before I can tell you that we have to leave. Then when we're back at the monastery I'll-"

"I'm not going back."

"Why?"

"I can't. I can't face the fact that I'll never fit in there...... Or anywhere. It's easier to just live back in villages, where I'm not close to anyone and their words hurt less."

"You're still upset about that? Look, you might not be....." She paused probably thinking of a word.

"Human," I said.

"Like them. But that doesn't mean you don't fit in!"

"Yes, it does. I don't get there jokes. I say random facts at random times. I don't get basic social cues."

"No one's perfect."

"And I'm the complete opposite. I didn't even remember my father." I stared at the floor sadly.

"That's because you're memory switch is flipped. Not your fault at all."

"My what?"

"Look, it's not important." I glared at her.

"It is to important! Tell me what it is!"

"A switch for your memories. I wasn't really sure if it was the reason, but after unhacking you I realized it was."

"Does that mean I can get my memories back?" Excitement filled me.

"Yes, but I don't think you'd want to. It's just- no one should have to deal with that."

"With what?"

"And you're already so upset about this- I just- maybe we should deal with this problem before creating more." I gave her a look.

"This isn't a problem that can be fixed. It's a fact. I don't fit in, and I never will."

"But you do fit in!"

"Do people laugh at people who fit in?"

"Yes, it's called being funny."

"When they're not making a joke!"

"Sometimes, when they're being ridiculous."

"Am I ridiculous often?"

"No."

"Then why do they laugh often!"

"Look, we all laugh at each other sometimes. It's not as often as you think."

"Maybe you're right, but that still doesn't change the fact that I'll never be like them! I'll never be normal! Ever!"

"One, none of them are normal. Two, normal's lame. Three, you don't need to be normal to fit in." I blinked confused.

"What?"

"I said you don't need to be normal to fit in. No one's normal. Half of us aren't even human! Wu, Hebi, me."

"You?"

"Yes, but that's not important. What's important is that this means you don't have to be normal to fit in. And you fit in. At least enough for them to care about you. They've been sending so many messages, asking if I've found you yet. I'm pretty sure if they didn't have to stop Pythor they would've joined my search."

"Really?"

"Yes, really. You're family, maybe not by blood, but still family. And family doesn't need to be normal. It just needs to be." I smiled. I began to glow. I gasped.

"What is going on?!?"

"It's called a true potential!"

"Cool! Pun intended!" I flew out of our hiding spot and saw Hebi surrounded by some serpentine. I quickly froze them.

"Bye, bye, jerks!" Hebi said.

We all ran out, smiling. I was smiling the biggest smile of them all, for I knew, that although I was a freak I had a home and a family that cared no matter what I was.
