"You shouldn't just be rash with who you side with, it can take weeks- months- years for all the information to come out. You have to wait before siding with people."

"How long can you wait before you're just choosing to be ignorant?"

"But you can't jump to conclusions immediately! The first story isn't always true!"

"How long does the story have to stay the same before you believe it? How long can you justify doing nothing to help others because you couldn't make a decision?"

"What could I do to help in a situation like this?"

"Have you even tried to help?"

———

"Confrontation won't do anything here- You're just going to make them angry, push them further to the other side. You have to be patient, you have to explain-"

"Why is that my job? Why do I have to be the bigger person? Why do I have to teach them? I'm tired of being the bigger person, I just want them to admit I'm right for once!"

"That's not going to happen and we both know it. They'll never change their minds, especially not when you're being so aggressive. If you want any chance at changing their minds, they have to feel heard first. It's like fishing, you have to let the line go slack before reeling sometimes, otherwise you'll break it."

"I'm so tired of saying the same things over and over again. How can they go back and forth between saying I'm the smartest person they know, and yet to young to know anything?"

"Those can both be true at the same time. You do know a lot, more than them, sometimes. But there are some things that you only learn while growing. Even if you know something since you're young, it can take time before you learn how to apply it correctly."

"I just- I am so... tired all of the time... I'm not supposed to be tired."

"... I'm tired too, but you remember when we were like them... It took the kindness and patience of others to pull you out of it. You need to be that person for others now. An eye for an eye leaves everyone blind, after all."

"God, stop talking like that. You sound so pretentious."

"I'm sorry, I'm trying. I don't know how else to speak."

———

"You can't wallow and be sad forever."

"Fuck you."

"I understand your hostility, it's an ignorant statement on the surface, but I'm being honest. You can't be like this forever. Either you stop feeling this way or you die. Depression is a silent killer, and it's affective because it makes you believe it isn't there. That it can't be there, because you don't have it as bad as others. Maybe that's why getting actually diagnosed is so relieving. Because you finally know you haven't just been lazy or fighting nothing."

"I'm not doing anything wrong. I'm just lying here and you're trying to make me feel bad for it."

"I'm not, I'm sorry I'm making you feel that way-"

"Just let me lay here. I'm tired and angry and frustrated and I hate myself. Just let me lie here. Just let me sleep."

"... For now... You can do this for now, but eventually, you have to do something and try to get better-"

"If I could get better I would have done that already! I don't want to feel like this! Why would I want to feel like this?! I want to get better but I can't! Just leave me alone!"

———

"Everything will fall into place, and then, most of it will disappear."

"That's probably for the best, there wasn't much good done."

"What about all the people who didn't do anything wrong though? The people who haven't gotten the chance to do anything yet? What about the people who did do good?"

"Is there enough of them to justify leaving the others alive?"

"I think there's more than enough. Animals haven't done anything wrong, babies that have only just been born... You see so much bad stuff because it's abnormal, it stands out... I know it's unfair to ask of you now, right now... try to remember the good stuff though, because it did happen, even if you have to trudge through a lot of genuinely awful stuff to get to it."

"Maybe things would be better if they... didn't get the chance to make those choices."

"You don't get to make that decision. No one should be able to."

"There's been a pattern of behavior... You're the one who told me I can't just stand aside while the story stays exactly the same."

"People are suffering, so you're going to let them die to end that suffering? Whether they live or die shouldn't feel up to you."

"If I do something they die, if I do nothing they die. What's the difference?"

"The difference is whether or not you tried. I know it's hard, I understand, and it can feel useless, but you'll feel more regret for having never tried, for having not done enough, than you would ever feel for trying your best."

"I don't think you know that."

"Maybe I don't,"

———

"You were wrong."

"About what?"

"About everything. He was always a bad person. And now I'm a bad person, just like him."

"You're nothing like him."

"He made me like this, like him, and you let him do it."

"Even if that were true, you accomplish nothing by complaining about it now."

"I don't care about being a 'good person' in your eyes anymore. You're just as awful as we are. Maybe you're even worse. At least he's open about how awful he is, at least I acknowledge it. But you fake it. You pretend to be good, to be an authority of moral, and you still managed to make the situation worse at every turn."

"I tried-"

"And you failed. Now leave me alone."

———

I jolt awake, shaking and trembling, cold and sweaty. I take deep, heavy breaths, shaky as they are, as I try to steady myself. I can't bring myself to open my eyes, to confirm that there's nothing here, and that I'm alone in my cabin. It's hard to open my eyes and confirm that there's no monsters or anything here. When I was younger I could, because monsters weren't real. But they are now. But they aren't the quiet, conniving creatures of darkness that are so often depicted in nightmares and horror films. They're loud, abrasive. Their most monstrous quality is that they won't let you ignore them.
