I sit in my house... Well, more like lay, but you know how it is...
The whole thing on Meta Knight has been... making me think, I guess. I dunno, I... I mean, everyone else seems to consider me his kid, but I can't... I mean he would be a good father figure, he's great for Kirby, but I'm... I dunno, I'm just not... I'm not like him. Either of them. Plus, I had a family before this, my mom, dad, brothers, my sister, my cousins, aunts, uncles and so on... Am I allowed to... Did he even mean it? Or was it just slip of the tongue? Or maybe just because he felt bad for me, and this is his way of trying to make me feel better or something..?
'Mija'...
He's never called Kirby 'mijo', right..? It feels like he would want to take on Kirby before me, eighth? They're both Star Warriors, they seem to be the same species, they get along super well, Meta Knight acts fatherly with him, I mean, why wouldn't he want to call Kirby 'mijo' before calling me 'mija'?
What am I even supposed to do right now? I've just been thinking in circles for the past... day or so...
Someone is going to come check on me at some point, probably one of the Knights, probably Meta Knight...
Do I talk to him about this? Do I talk to anyone about this? Who would I talk to about this? Meta Knight has enough going on in his life, I don't even know if he knows he called me that. The most responsible person in town is Tiff, and she's just gonna tell me to talk to Meta Knight about it. Besides, she doesn't need any more complications to worry about with how things go here.
Who are the responsible adults in town? I would normally put Meta Knight first in this situation, but, y'know...
I don't think Yabui would want to talk to me unless necessary. Kawasaki definitely isn't emotionally reliable. As nice as the other adults in town are, they aren't really... Well, I don't trust them to not just go and tell Meta Knight about my worries themselves. I guess I could write a letter to Escargoon's mom, she's nice enough, and she likes me, but it would take a very long time to get the letters back and fourth, have a full conversation, and come to any meaningful resolution. So who does that leave..?
Whispy, I guess, but he's just gonna do what TIFF would do any tell me to talk to Meta Knight...
If I imagine both of the smartest, most emotionally stable people in this town would tell me just to talk, then maybe I should just talk.
But talking is hard, especially about emotions. I always clam up, and shut down. I get way too stressed even trying to identify emotions, let alone talk about them.
Maybe I should just write some cringe ass letter and have someone else give it to Meta Knight. Because there's no way I'll verbally be able to communicate my thoughts, and I might just have an aneurism on the spot if I have to stand there and watch him react to whatever I wrote. Especially if he does that parent/grandparent thing where they read it out loud no matter how private it might be. My God, I'd just keel over at that point.
So I guess I'm writing a letter.
I shift around, carefully moving to lay on the floor, finding a flat space to write that won't make my writing look all jittery, or make the pencil rip the paper, and begin writing.
Dear Meta Knight,
No, to formal, that feels weird. I erase it, and try again.
Hello,
Immediately erase that one as well. Maybe greetings won't work for this, maybe just write it like a synopsis or something?
This happened, I reacted like this, it made me feel this, I want to know how you feel about it, I don't know how to verbally talk about it.
Yeah, that'll work, I just gotta press past how cringe I'll feel while writing it.
"Meta Knight, at the end of the Grand Prix, you called me 'mija'. I don't know if you know you did that, I didn't even notice at first, but I guess I need to talk about it. I've been feeling stressed and confused about it since, and kinda just locked myself in my house. I'm not, like, overly distressed or anything, I just get overwhelmed by emotions normally, don't worry about it, we'll address that some other time."
'Hopefully never', I can't help but think.
"I'm not upset about it, but it is upsetting. Not because of you, but because of personal stuff I guess? I don't know, being on Popstar is just kinda forcing me to confront my emotional state and I don't know what to do about it. Besides this, I guess. If you could tell me if you meant to call me that or not, and why, that would be very helpful for my thought process, because I don't know how to react yet."
I look over it again, and yeah, it feels rushed and sloppy, but if I rewrite it once, I'm gonna rewrite it 100 times until it's basically nothing. I just gotta send it like this, no beta reader or anything.
Okay, but who do I get to send it? Melman, duh, he's the mail man. But do I have to have an envelope for that? Or stamps? I don't own any of that. I also don't really have money...
Melman's nice, I can probably just do a few favors for him and he'll let me have an envelope and stamp and whatever I need to send the letter... Or maybe I don't need any of that and he'll just take it for me, who knows.
I walk down to town, the letter folded up, and in my pocket. I fidget with it, feeling the need to keep my hand in my pocket with it in order to not loose it. I feel awkward about the whole thing, but I do, in fact, have to do it. I'm just lucky enough that pretty much everyone in this town, (minus DeDeDe and Escargoon), I'd pretty nice and understanding.
"Hey! Melman!" Crouch down in front of the post office, greeting him, he turns with a small huff, but smiles and waves at me in return.
"Ah! Y/N! Great to see you! What're ya doin' here?" He waddles out of the post office to talk with me outside. I sit down so we can talk more eye to eye. And also so I don't break my back bending down to talk to him.
"Uh, I actually wanted to send a letter, but I don't have any envelopes or stamps..."
"Well, who's it to?"
"Meta Knight."
"... You're sending a letter to someone you see basically every day?" I sigh heavily, rubbing at my face.
"Yeah, I know, it's stupid, but- but it's not important-" Melman laughs a bit, holding out his hand.
"It's alright kid, people in this town have done stranger things. There was a solid month where Sir Ebrum was sending letters to Lady Like. While they were married, and living together. This is a nonissue kid." I hesitate, before handing him the folded up letter.
"Thanks Melman, is there anything I can do to make it up to you?" He waves me off with a small, frustrated noise.
"Bah." He sways his hand. "You don't need to do nothin', this is just my job, don't cost nothing. That's paid by tax dollars." He laughs, and I can't help but smile a bit.
"Thanks Melman."
