The Spanish Empire the 4th largest Empire and reached from 1492-1976 but by the the 1840's only kept a few islands. Why? Well in the early 1800's Napoleon leader of France wanted aid from Spain to conquer Portugal. This was a huge mistake as shortly after capturing Lisbon in Portugal, Napoleon invaded Madrid, Spain. Which made Napoleon's Brother become the Spanish king, Napoleon's Brother wasn't liked in Spanish America which lead to the independence of Gran Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Chile, and Argentina, and Florida being annexed by the Americans. Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines were left. And in 1898 the Spanish-American War happened which made the Spanish Empire in Asia and the Americas dissolve and again in the 1890s Spain had colonized Northern and Southern Morroco, Western Sahara, and Ecuatorial Guinea. And in 1976 Spain withdrew from their last colony because the death of Franco in 1975
