What were are talking about, are places that want full independence from their ruling country. This chapter we are going to talk about regions in Europe. Scotland. Everyone knows about the Scottish referendum in 2014. Scotland's independence failed. But ever since the Brexit vote, the Scottish people wanted a referendum but this referendum is yet to come. Will Scotland successfully secede? Nobody knows yet. Veneto, Italy. Veneto had a history of self rule, like Scotland. Veneto also has it's own language and culture from the rest of Italy. Veneto was one the first Republics in the modern world, it only ended because it was annexed by the Kingdom of Italy in the 19th Century. Catalonia, Spain. Catalonia strongly wants independence from the Kingdom of Spain, like Veneto and Scotland, Catalonia had self rule after Napoleon's invasion of Spain. Catalonia also has it's own language and culture. Catalonia is sick of supporting the poorer regions in Spain. A Catalonian referendum was supposed to come but was blocked by the Spanish Parliament. The Catalonian independence, if it comes true, will be aggressively be fought by the Spanish government. Basque, Spain. Another region of Spain, Basque unlike Catalonia, never had been independent, but Basque wants independence from Spain because Basque speaks .... well Basque, not Spanish and Basque wants independence from Spain. Northern Ireland, UK. Even though, no political party wants Northern Ireland to become independent, the Northern Irish want to rejoin the rest of Ireland. After the Brexit vote in 2016, the British Parliament were having thoughts about a Northern Irish reunification with Ireland. Flanders and Wallonia, Belgium. If you don't know about the Autonomous Region's in Belguim, there are 2 Autonomous Regions. There is the the Dutch speaking Flanders in Northern Belgium, and the French speaking Wallonia in Southern Belgium. French speaking population wants to either join France or become independent, while the Dutch speaking population wants to be independent. Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. After a Yugoslav war Bosnia, there were 2 regions in the country Bosnia and Herzegovina, there is the Bosnia-Herzegovina Federation and the Republic of Srpska. The people of Srpska either want to join Serbia or become independent. These regions can be independent or join any other country at any time.
