In this chapter we're looking at disputed borders between countries and countries claiming land on disputed regions. Morocco. Everybody here knows about the Western Sahara dispute it had with Spain. But did you also know about the disputed Spanish cities? Yes when Morocco gained independence from France and Spain. Spain didn't let go of all of Spanish Morocco, Spain gave a majority of Spanish Morocco but there is 3 Spanish cities between north Morocco and the Strait of Gibraltar that you can look at in Google Maps. Speaking of Gibraltar, Gibraltar has been claimed by Spain for centuries but the people of Gibraltar want to stay with Great Britain as recent referendums has been released in Gibraltar. Egypt and Sudan. In the western border between Egypt and Sudan their is a disputed territory that Egypt and Sudan claim is part of their own country. The region is known as the Hala'ib Triangle is disputed. Why? Because Empire. So when Egypt became a British Dominion the British and the Egyptians made a border between Egypt and modern day Sudan. The first border in 1899 was the 22nd Parallel the straight line of a border we see today. But in 1904 the British changed the border for "better usage of the land" as what is now the Hala'ib Triangle was more connected to the Sudanese than the Egyptians. And what is know the unclaimed land known as Bir Tawil was used by the Egyptians for trading purposes. So in 1956 when Sudan and Egypt became fully independent Sudan believed the border was the "better usage of the land" line and Egypt believed is was the 22nd Parallel. Currently the Hala'ib Triangle that both Egypt and Sudan claim as their land is pretty much 100% under Egypt. If you want to see the border go look between the Egyptian and Sudanese border until you find the disputed border (which is dotted by the way). Guatemala. Guatemala believes the entire country of Belize belongs to them. Why? Because Empire. So when Mexico successfully gained independence and became a short lived monarchy their was the province of Guatemala which includes the Mexican state of Chiapas, Guatemala, and Belize. So when the Federal Republic of Central America broke up, the British took Belize while Chiapas was re-annexed by Mexico. Currently Guatemala is claiming that Belize is part of Guatemala but Guatemala is doing nothing for that dream to come true. That's all for now I might make another but for now that's all I got.
