Japan one of the richest countries ever but not even close to have a powerful military compared to other nations. Why?. Well Japan or Imperial Japan wanted to expand outside of mainland Japan so carved an empire in East Asia. In the late 1800's Imperial Japan took the island of Taiwan from the Qing Dynasty in China. In 1910 the Japanese decided to take a Japanese enemy, Korea. So in 1910 took control of the Korean Peninsula. And shortly after taking Korea they took Manchuko in from the Republic of China. In 1937 China was under Civil War the Chinese Nationalist Party and the Chinese Communist Party. Imperial Japan saw this as a good opportunity to invade China and the Japanese invaded China taking major Chinese cities like Nanjing and Beijing. When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941 the U.S declared war on Japan which was allied with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. The Japanese took Burma from Great Britain and Indochina from France and took the islands of South East Asia and New Guinea. In 1945 the the U.S bombed the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Then monarch of Japan, Emperor Hirohito Showa signed a peace treaty with the Allied Powers. The treaty was to give the Japanese land back to the governments that were invaded by the Japanese. Also the treaty said to decrease aggressive armies and increase in defensive armies that's why Japan wasn't as powerful as Imperial Japan.
