Today (the chapter was published) is September 4th. 3 days before the 20th Anniversary of the fatal shooting of rapper Tupac Shakur. So in this chapter we're going to talk about rap from the 1970's to now. So where did rap or hip hop come from? Well is originated in New York City in mostly the Bronx where block parties were filling the streets for African American communities. The hip hop genre was focused on tough life of the streets, being a criminal early or later in life, or simply breaking the law. The genre didn't get really popular until the 1980's and 1990's. In the 1980's rappers from the West Coast of the U.S created their sub genre of hip hop known as gangsta rap, under the wing of gangs in early age or doing or selling drugs in an early age was focused in gangsta rap. The West Coast blew up the genre making the rappers in the East Coast a bit pissed off. So then in 1990-1997 their was the rivalry between the East Coast and the West Coast. The West Coast had their own versions of hip hop an example is G-Funk (gangsta rap with whistles). And so did the East Coast. In 95 and 96 the rivalry was going hard between West Coast rapper Tupac Shakur and East Coast rapper Notorious B.I.G a.k.a Biggie Smalls. In 96 2pac was shot in Las Vegas in September 7th, in September 13th 2pac died because of his injuries. In 97 Biggie was shot and killed in March 8th in Los Angeles in similar fashion to 2pac's murder. Both East Coast and West Coast stopped their fued because both coasts lost their best rappers and they didn't want more violence and rapper murders. Fast forward to 2009 the rap we listen and get published today is made. The rap genre has spread out the U.S and into Canada and Mexico then after that almost the entire world. And that my fellow readers is the history of rap.
