How many countries are there? Well nobody knows. Why? Because there are countries that everyone knows about and then there are self-declared independent countries. Let's go to a LARGE Organization. The United Nations. There are 193 members of the United Nations, this might be the lowest number you hear about the number of countries. There is also Vatican City, home to the Pope and the smallest country ever. So there is at least 194 countries on planet Earth. Now to the self-declared independent countries. The most recognized country that is not in the UN besides the Vatican is the Republic of Kosovo. It is disputed that is Kosovo a country or a province of Serbia. 100 out of 193 UN members recognize Kosovo as a country. Why? Well Kosovo has an ethnic group (The Albanians) that is the majority of Kosovo's population instead of ethnic Serbs. Now the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic or Western Sahara, Western Sahara is disputed between Morocco and the self-declared independent country of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. Why? Well the Sawhari people wanted independence ever since being colonized by Spain. When Morocco gained independence in the 1950s they thought they retook Pre-Colonial Morocco which is Western Algeria and the entirety of Mauritania and Western Sahara. But Morocco wasn't able to control it because the Spanish and French forces did not withdraw from the regions. Spain did get pressure from the Polisario Front (Sahrawi people who want independence)whom fought the Spanish forces and the UN to decolonize the region. Francisco Franco the Prime Minister of Spain decided to keep Western Sahara a bit longer. Fast forward to 1976, Spain decided to withdraw from Western Sahara. And now 80% of the region is controlled by Morocco while the Polisario Front control the rest. This is taking too long so I will explain shortly. The Republic of Somaliland self-declared in Somalia and completely unrecognized. Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus self-declared in Cyprus only recognized by Turkey. Abkazia and South Ossetia self-declared in Georgia only 5 UN members recognize both these nations. Republic of China (Taiwan) not self-declared but considered part of China even though Taiwan isn't by control by China. So how many countries are there? Well how many do you think.
