Vatican City. Home of the Pope and, the absolute smallest country ever. When did we get this small nation? Well it's complicated. The short answer is because Mussolini and the long answer is because Italy's complicated history. First we need to go back to 1870 when the Pope ruled a country named the Papal States which started in 754 A.D to 1870, during that time the Papal States built St Peters Basilica, the largest church ever and St Peters was constructed on a hill named Vatican then around the hill was a wall to keep St Peters secure. Of course St Peters Basilica was in Rome, enclaved by it as a matter a fact. So in 1870 the Kingdom of Italy which had control of Northern Italy and Southern Italy, they said "Why not?" And invaded the Papal States, which unified the Italian Peninsula. Of course the Pope hid in St Peters and the King of Italy didn't want to kill the Pope or injure him and the Pope unrecognized the Kingdom of Italy's existence but kept on saying to stop imprisoning the Pope even though the Pope unacknowledged Italy's existence. And of course what did the King of Italy do? Nothing. The King of Italy thought waiting it out will let the Pope to surrender and well... acknowledge Italy's existence. But 69 years later nothing changed. Which now brings us to Benito Mussolini the Fascist Prime Minister of Italy. Mussolini was tired about the Pope literally talking trash and about his self imprisonment. So Mussolini did this, Mussolini gave the Vatican to the Pope and gave the Pope apology money. In return the Pope promised to acknowledge Italy's existence and was supposed to remain neutral in politics and wars. And if Vatican City ever gets attacked, Italy will protect the Vatican. And Vatican City was brought to life. So yeah Vatican has everything that a country has, like a bank, police, laws, jails, and a leader. But not a permanent population though. So if your Catholic like me, I recommend going to Vatican City at least once.
