What is the Cold War? Well the Cold War wasn't a physical war. The Cold War was more of a war for world influence, the Cold War was basically Capitalism vs Communism. Let's talk all about the events in the Cold War. But first let's see how the Cold War started. After World War 2 ended in 1945 with the Japanese surrender, the United States and the Soviet Union decided to expand their influence all over the world. This caused tensions between the Capitalist Nations and the Communist ones. So the Cold War fought through proxy wars and events. It started from 1949-1989. European divide. A few moments before Nazi Germany surrendered in 1945, the Nazi Occupation of Europe from France to Ukraine and as South to Greece and as North to Norway. When the Allied Powers invaded the Axis Occupied territory, Great Britain, France and the U.S took the West while the Soviet Union took the East. So when the West was occupied they were given Capitalist governments while the East was given Communist governments (except for Greece). Eastern Pact, Western Pact. After World War 2, Europe (and Germany) was divided between East and West, while the West, Scandinavia, & Greece had Capitalist governments, The East had Communist Governments while the lines which split Europe was between West and East Germany, Austria, Italy, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia was neutral by the way. Korean War. If you read the Korea Explained chapter you should know. NATO and Warsaw Pact. In 1949, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO for short was formed. In 1953 the then Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev responded to NATO and formed the Warsaw Pact and basically have the same thing with NATO. Protect other members in the organization if the member is attacked by a non member country. Vietnam War. The Vietnam War was a Civil War between the Communist North Vietnam and the Capitalist South Vietnam. In 1953, after gaining independence from France they went at all out war with each other. The War would go on from 1953-1974 when the Communist North Vietnamese government invaded South Vietnam and took the South Vietnamese Capital of Saigon. Cuban Missile Crisis. When Fidel Castro and his brother took power in Cuba they made Cuba a Communist nation. When the United States figured out that the U.S.S.R stashed Nuclear Missiles in Cuba they were scared since the missiles can hit any city in the U.S, Mexico, Central America, and Southern Canada. It only ended because Nikita Khrushchev and John F Kennedy agreed to get rid of the missiles in Turkey and Cuba. Sino-Soviet split. After Nikita Khrushchev took power in Russia he de-Stalinized Soviet Russia. Mao Zedong leader of the Chinese Communist Party, really didn't like Khrushchev and like Stalin more, so in the 70's Communist China and they Soviets split causing tensions between the Communist States. North Korea. North Korea has stayed isolated, that's all I have to say. Space Race. The Soviets and the U.S were in race for better space technology. The Soviet Russians sent the first satellite into space known as Sputnik I. And the Soviets send the first man in space. But the U.S beat them in the Moon (A place where an idiotic Conspiracy Theory says no human landed on the moon). Afghanistan Civil War. In the 80's there is a Civil war against the Communist Afghanistan government by the Afghani people while rebel groups fought against the Afghanis' while the U.S gave $3,000,000,000 to a rebel group. BUT, one of the leaders named Osama Bin Laden went to form Al-Qaeda and well 9/11. In 1989 the U.S.S.R collapse and the Communist party in Russia was banned turning the Soviet Union into 15 seperate countries.
