What if I ask you which countries with similar names, you might quickly say Slovenia and Slovakia, since both countries only have 2 letters in their entire name that is different. Well how did both countries get their names? Of course history. Slovenia and Slovakia both have extremely similar histories, both countries used to be part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, both countries were once under one country with what is now different nations, those one countries once being Communist, and those one countries collapsing after the fall of the Soviet Union. Slovenia and Slovakia both got their names from their ethnic groups. In Slovenia, their largest ethnic group are ethnic Slovenes, and in Slovakia, their largest ethnic group are ethnic Slovaks. Slovakia in 1919, under the Treaty of Saint-Germain-En-Laye and the Treaty of Trianon became independent from the Austro-Hungarian Empire but combined a state with ethnic Czechs forming the Republic of Czechoslovakia, and of course Czechoslovakia got it's name from it's 2 largest ethnic groups, ethnic Czechs and ethnic Slovaks. Then in 1938 Czechoslovakia was annexed by Nazi Germany, splitting the country, the Czech part of Czechoslovakia being annexed by Germany and the Slovak part of Czechoslovakia becoming a Fascist puppet state. It stayed like that until 1945 when Czechoslovakia re-annexed territories from Nazi Germany and Hungary, but Czechoslovakia became Communist, and joined the Warsaw Pact in the 50's. Czechoslovakia would collapse in 1992 after a peaceful break up between the Czechs and Slovaks after the brink of nationalism after the fall of Communism. Slovenia had a similar fate to Slovakia just slightly different, again under the Treaty of Saint-Germain-En-Laye and the Treaty of Trianon, Serbia annexed Vojvodina, and Serbia and Montenegro joined together and annexed Bosnia-Herzegovina, and a majority what is now Slovenia and Croatia. Then the new kingdom was named the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes but later changed its name to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. In 1941, the Axis Powers invade Yugoslavia and split the country, Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy annexed Slovenia, created the Independent State of Croatia (Fascist puppet state), Montenegro (Fascist puppet state), Serbia (Fascist puppet state), Bulgaria annexed F.Y.R.O.M (Macedonia), and Hungary re-annexing Vojvodina. This ended in 1945 when Yugoslavia became a Socialist Federation which now annexed Istria from Italy in 1946. Yugoslavia then would be peaceful and become neutral during the Cold War until 1991, when Yugoslavia was beginning high amounts of nationalism all across the country eventually peace was made in Yugoslavia and what is now the 6-7 independent republics would be fully independent in 2006/2008. So why do Slovenia and Slovakia have similar names? And as a matter a fact similar histories? Well it's simply a coincidence for these 2 nations to have extremely similar histories and similar names.
