China. The 2nd largest country in Asia and the most populated with 1.3B Citizens. And their is Taiwan an island between the East China Sea and the South China Sea and is one of the most densely populated with 23M Citizens. Bit their's a problem. Which is China? You must be saying "What? Their's only one China and that h
is China." But believe it or not there are 2 China's and both China's agree theirs only one China but is disputed which China is that one China. So we're going to talk all about Taiwan and China and see how the dispute started. 1945-1949 after the 2nd Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) and World War II (1939-1945). Their was one Democratic not Communist China known as the Republic of China and this China had control of mainland China and Taiwan. In 1949 Mao Zedong and his Communist forces overwhelmed the weak Nationalist forces and the Nationalists had control of Taiwan and the Communists had mainland China. Yes Communist China had well China but the Nationalist Party of China which was in Taiwan of course represented China at the UN and when the Nationalist Party of China which fled to Taiwan became a permanent member of the UN Security Council and that meant Taiwan was technically China all the way until the 1970's when the UN decided to remove Taiwan and make the mainland Chinese government, China and it was mostly during the 70's and 90's when most of the UN recognize the mainland Communist Chinese government as China. I said most, not all. Currently 182 UN members recognize mainland China as China, and 11 UN members recognize the old Taiwanese government as China. First you be asking why? Why did most of the UN just abandoned the R. China for the P.R China? Well if you read my Cold War Explained chapter you should know about the Sino-Soviet Split in the 1970's which meant Communist China split from the Warsaw Pact and the other Communist aligned countries. So that was the chance for the U.S to gain more influence over the Soviet Union and also to possibly make Communist China to just not care about the Communist North Vietnam during the Vietnam War causing victory for the Capitalist South Vietnam. But of course the Communists still won against the Capitalist South Vietnam. But back to Taiwan. So when China and U.S increased relations the Communist government decided to attempt to unify or at least decrease the tensions. Communist China offered Taiwan a "Three Links" and the 3 links were transportation, communication, and commerce. Of course Taiwan replied with 3 noes and that was NO contact, NO negotiation, and NO compromise. And after that Taiwan closed the country for the Chinese but (almost) otherj ethnicities were allowed in. And the Taiwanese government recommended it's Citizens to not go to China. But by 1987 the Chinese were allowed in and the Taiwanese government allowed their citizens to move to mainland China whenever. But when did the one China come to place? Well both of the governments agreed their is one China in 1992 but again the one China dispute. Ok that's the history but what about one question. Why won't just China invade. I mean seriously there hundreds of nukes pointed on the island and there is technically no peace treaty between the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China so why not invade? Because America! See after the Nationals fled to Taiwan, the U.S funded billions of dollars and also sent weapons to Taiwan and also if China has a problem with Taiwan, they have a problem with the United States. Currently China attacking Taiwan is likely since the previous president of Taiwan, President Ma Ying-jeou kept Taiwan from being invaded and agrees that Taiwan is not China but he's no longer in office. The current female president of Taiwan, President Tsai Ing-wen elected in May 2016, calls Taiwan a country and says it will stay a country until invaded. Do these idiots really want to start World War III?
