Cyprus an island that you mostly never heard about. Cyprus is an island in the Mediterranean Sea and is part of the European Union. Looking at the island on Google you will think nothing is wrong until you see a political map. Basically the island is split by the Republic of Cyprus and the almost completely unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, also a few British military bases and roads. Why? Well when Cyprus gained independence from the United Kingdom it was pretty fine but the British stayed on parts where they left their military bases and roads to the Military bases making Cypriot exclaves (an exclave is part of a country separated from the rest of the country). In 1980 the Turks invaded 40% of the island on the northside of the island. Shortly after Turkey invaded, they declared an independent nation, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which lead to a war which was getting really out of hand so the United Nations made the UN Buffer Zone which splits the island. The only part of the island not split by the UN Buffer Zone is a British Road. Cyprus was technically split before because a majority of Cypriots are Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot. But again Northern Cyprus only has one supporter, Turkey. No other UN member recognizes Northern Cyprus as a country and is called an occupied territory of the Republic of Cyprus. The 2 Cypriot governments really hate each other but the people believe the split was because of racial child's play and the Cypriots on both sides want to reunite.
