Like always we going to talk about the regions wanting independence or secession from their ruling nation. New Caledonia, France. New Caledonia is an island not that far from Australia. New Caledonia was and currently is a colony of France, a referendum in the 1990"s was made but 90% of the population voted to stay with France and currently a lot of New Caledonian's want to get rid of the French sovereignty. Hawaii, United States. Hawaii was an independent country until the 1870's-1880's when it was incorporated into an American territory before officially becoming a state. Of course some Native Hawaiians feel like they have been colonized by the United States and want an independent Hawaii like it was about 140 years ago. Guam. Guam is an American territory that was taken from Spain in 1898 after Spain lost the Spanish-American War. Just like Puerto Rico, a Spanish speaking island with no history of independence. Cook Islands, New Zealand. The Cook Islands in New Zealand have been a British Protectorate until joining the Dominion and later the Commonwealth of New Zealand so the Cook Islands were seperate from New Zealand for awhile. Next time Secession in Asia.
