Have you always wondered what makes Great Britain Great? Well where did the name "Britain" come from? Before explaining to you how Britain was called Britain, just a quick reminder that Great Britain refers to the island of Great Britain which comprises of England, Scotland, and Wales, not the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Now that we're done with that let's go straight to Britain. The word "Britain" first came from a writing known as Almagest back in 147/148 CE. The writer preferred the large island which is Great Britain to be called ..... Great Britain. While the smaller island which is Ireland, to be called Little Britain. When Britain was first officially called Britain or similar to the word Britain was by Greek explorer Pythius, who was the first to use a written form of Britain, when he first travelled to the island on the 4th Century. When he first arrived he gave the island 2 names, Brettaniai and Prettanike. The Romans then came to Britain and annexed it into it's empire, calling it "the province of Britannia" which only included England and Wales. So technically Britain just meant England and Wales, eventually the Kingdom of England (controversially) conquered Wales to control the entirety of Britain. But the name Britain changed in 1707 when the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland joined together to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain. So Britain simply meant England and Wales until Scotland and England joined together to make Great Britain.
