Countries. 99% of the people live under a flag. But the countries you see in maps didn't always look like what you see. Let's talk about that. Mother Russia, largest country ever. When you were first taught about Russia you would see 2 flags. Red, white, and blue tri-color. OR. A red background with a gold hammer & Sickle with a gold and red star. The red, white, blue tri-color is today's Russia. The red background with Hammer & Sickle is the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics or U.S.S.R or Soviet Union or Soviet Russia. The Soviet Union is considered the largest country ever which is not an empire. The Soviet Union collapsed in 1989 because the fall of Communism. Yugoslavia was a Communist Eastern European nation from 1918-1991 or 1918-2006, just like Soviet Russia it collapsed because of Communism, also it collapsed because when Yugoslavia became a Socialist Republic it's first leader Josip Broz Tito kept Yugoslavia united when he died in 1980 the ethnic groups of Yugoslavia started civil wars which left what is now 6 countries and 1 self-declared country. The Canadian province of Newfoundland was a separate colony from Canada until WW2 because Newfoundland was getting hit hard from the Great Depression. The Chinese Autonomous Region named Tibet was once a country, Before a Communist China, The Nationalist Republic of China let Tibet be an independent country after the Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945), when the Chinese Communist won the Chinese Civil War and the Nationalist fled to Taiwan, in 1949 the Chinese Communist annexed Tibet.
