The British are hated in Argentina, and not that long ago, a protest near the British Embassy in Buenos Aires. People burned British flags. Why? Well it's easy. It's some islands in the South Pacific near the Argentine Coast named the Falkland Islands. Let's see why the islands are disputed in the first place. The 1st European that claimed the islands was an English Sailor named John Strong in 1690. It stayed under English then later British control until it was seceded to Spain in 1713. Then in 1764 France invaded the islands. And in 1770 Spain took the Falkland Islands back from France. Spain took control of the Falklands all the way until 1811 when the Spanish evacuated the islands. In 1820 American Privateer David Jewett landed on the Falkland Islands and claimed it for what is now Argentina. In 1829 Argentina sold the islands as a payment for a debt. In 1833 British sailed to the Falklands and it became a British Colony again. For almost 150 Years the Argentine government claimed that the islands still belongs to the Argentine government. In 1982, Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands and claimed it as part of Argentina and believed the British will not respond with force. They were wrong. After 3 months of war the British reconquered the islands. And then the British Parliament made everyone living in the Falklands an immediate British citizen. In 2013 a referendum in the Falklands was passed as to stay British or become Argentine. Almost every Falkand inhabitant wanted to stay British. Argentina says that the referendum is not legitimate. Today the Falkland Islands are basically all British and is still under the control of Great Britain. And Argentina still wants those islands back.
