Russia. The prequel and sequel of the Soviet Union. But speaking of the Soviet Union, the Soviets were one of the main reason the Axis lost World War II. But mainly of the forces in and by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. But there was another major Axis that the Soviets mostly never fought against. Yes I'm talking about the Empire of Imperial Japan. So the question is why didn't Imperial Japan invade Russia during World War II? Mainly one reason. The Battle of Khalkin Gol. The Battle of Kalkhin Gol was a battle between Mongolia which fell to Soviet influence, and the Japanese puppet state in Manchuria (Manchuko). The Mongolians won the battle because Manchuko didn't get much direct help from Japan. Shortly after the British and French declaration of war in September 3rd 1939, the Soviets and Japanese made an official non-aggression pact. So because of this non-aggression pact, the Soviets nor Japanese invaded each other even during the Axis invasion of Russia or the Japanese Bombing of Pearl Harbor. So both nations basically ignored each other even through their allies where fighting each other's allies. Just because they ignored each other doesn't mean they didn't fight at all. In August 1945 the Soviets invaded Manchuko and North Korea and the Soviet influenced Mongolia invades Mengjiang (Inner Mongolia) another Japanese puppet state. Just when the U.S were dropping atom bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. If the Japanese did invade Russia it would either be in June 1941 or late 1941 and early 1942. Either way, Mongolia would easily fall to Japan, giving Japan an advantage over China and might invade northern China. But Japan would still fail invading China because of China's population and size, Japan would be unable to invade all of China, with the population fighting back. So either way the Axis would still have lost the war. Even if the Japanese helped the Nazis.
