Everything was fine and great in the glade. The birds were chirping, the sun was shining, everyone was happy. Everyone fell in love and lived happily ever after. Right?

Wrong. Everything was the opposite. We had lost two boys last weeks due to the maze: one to a griever sting and the other never came back after spending a night in the maze accidentally.

We lost Nick, our old leader. We needed a volunteer to go down into the box to see if that was a way to escape the glade. The only issue was, when we pulled him up, only half of him made of back. This means Alby was in charge. This also meant Alby needed to recruit a second in command. He chose the kindest, sweetest, cutest, smartest and strongest boy in the whole glade: Newt.

I would be lying through my teeth if I said I didn't like that boy. We were best friends but that was it, and for the moment I could handle it. I knew that I needed him in my life somehow and being just friends would suffice for now.

But everything's been flipped upside down this week. Besides the horrors the box and the maze have shown us this week, a new arrival just might be the end for Newt and my friendship.

A girl. A gorgeous girl. An amazing girl that I could never compare to.

Her name is Emily. She has light brown hair cut straight at her shoulders with bangs covering her baby blue eyes. Her hourglass figure is still outlined through the ragged old clothes the box provides her. She has a certain elegance as she walks, where as I stomp most of the time through the glade, being as I've been here a year and need to keep my feet firmly on the ground.

It started off slow but its progressed as the days go on. Newt spent her first day beside her, comforting her and showing her around. She was scared, no doubt, but he made it seem as if she was a frail little deer needing to be rescued from a hunter, and we were the hunters.

He was very quiet about how this all began. First, he spent all day with her, then he spent all night with her. Then came the part of the days where he would ditch me for her. Then there was ignoring. I could have been having a blatant conversation with him, but his eyes and mind were focused on her across the glade.

Then the lies began. He claimed to have some sort of injury every few hours just to see her at her job; she was made a med-jack. He would lie every time I asked what he was looking at, even though it was completely obvious.

It was all normal to me now. It was a numb pain in my chest as I watched the boy I love fall for another. But there was still hope. That was, until today.

"Hey (Y/N)?" Newt asked strolling over to my table, the one we used to eat at... together. "Can I talk to you for a minute?"

Me being wary on the idea of following him, I got up and followed him to the deadheads. He stood pacing slightly with his hands running through his thick and unbrushed hair.

"Is everything alright?" I asked making him look up at me. The flushed cheeks and sweaty palms gave it all away that he was extremely nervous.

"Yeah I just needed a girls advice," he said making my nerves race. He took a deep breaths and held his arms out. "I'm in love!"

Those three words were a swift kick to the face. As if someone dug their slimy hands into my chest, and ripped out my beating heart. My blood ran cold and my breathing hitched. I just hoped he didn't notice and, as expected, he didn't.

"And I wanted to ask another girl what to do. I mean I want to impress this girl but I'm not sure she's into that. Can you help me?" Through my blurry vision from my tears, I looked up at Newt. I nodded with a fake smile, a smile I taught myself early on in the glade.
