Thank you for sending it in and I hope you like it even though it's very cliche and cheesy and short! I hope we get to talk more! *I arrived in the box four months ago just like everybody else, except I was the only girl. At first, only one of the boys would actually speak to me without glaring or trying to run away at the first opportunity. Half of them were terrified of me and the other half were cold around me. All of them but one. Newt.
Newt wasn't the first one to pull me out of the box, but he was the first to approach me in a calm and gentle way. He helped me to my feet after the boy from the box tossed me to the ground and ended up giving me the tour of the glade. Newt was so kind from then on and made sure I was always comfortable wherever I was. That's how we ended up spending most of our time together when I wasn't working.
Unfortunately, we didn't have the same job. He worked as a Track-hoe in the gardens while I worked with the builders. It wasn't even my choice of a job, considering I wanted to work with Newt everyday, but the Keeper insisted I worked with him. And as much as I disliked it, the Keeper was Gally.
There are tons to say with Gally, but to sum it up into one word, I would chose bipolar. It was clear to me and the other gladers that Gally's attitude would switch at the drop of a dime, and I was usually the one on both ends. The days Gally was in a good mood would be the easiest days for me, but the days he was unhappy would be the worst. He would have me build something, take it apart, and then rebuild it again, all while he screamed in my ear. It was exhausting.
What was worse though, was the fight. Never had there been any physical fights but there were the threats back and forth and the constant pulling me in two directions. Somehow the Keeper of Builders and the Second in Command were fighting over one thing: me.
"I need her to help me rebuild the benches that your shuck friend broke!" Gally screamed at Newt who was sitting beside me. We couldn't make it through one meal before the two of them started at it.
"She's been working all day! She's hungry and tired and is going to eat her lunch when lunch is made," Newt fought back. This was always how the fights went; Gally would make up some insane excuse as to why he needed me and me alone, while Newt fought for me to stay where I was, usually when I was with him. Alby and the others knew about the fight but after the rule he made about no gladers touching me, he was sort of caught without any resolution.
"She can eat with me after we finish. And don't you sit there and act like you know what's best for her." Gally took his glare off Newt and softened his eyes when they fell on me. "Will you please come with me?" Gally's smile definitely didn't fit with the deep growl conveyed in his voice. One more minute and he was gonna snap.
"She will bloody not. You have an entire group of lads ready to work for you." Newt stood up for the first time in this fight, and stood tall in front of Gally. Gally knew he couldn't do much to the blond, considering he was in fact his superior, but that didn't stop him from threatening him. "I know what's best for her, and that's to stay as bloody far as she can away from you."
Gally glared harsher at Newt, not noticing that I had stood up. I pushed on Gally's chest with my back to Newt, intentionally choosing a side. Gally's glare then fell down to me when he saw I wasn't telling Newt off.
"He isn't gonna make you happy like I can!" he screamed with his fingers pointing at his chest. "I am so much better than this shank!"
"At least I take care of her," Newt instinctively pushed me behind his back, "I'm not the one who bloody yells at her every time you mess up! She doesn't like you and she never will."
Gally's face flushed red with anger, which was when his fist connected with Newt's jaw. Newt fell to the floor with his hand holding his cheek.
"What the hell, Gally!" I screamed, dropping to the floor to help Newt. He sat up enough to let me see the red mark covering the left side of his face. He would certainly have a bruise tomorrow.
"That's enough. You," Alby rushed over and set his hand on Gally's shoulder, "are going in the pit." Gally put up a fight before shrugging Alby off and storming off towards the pits.
Once the gladers all left the room, I turned back to Newt. "Hey, you okay?" he asked tucking a piece of hair behind my ear.
I chuckled and leaned into his touch. "Me? I should be asking you that." Seconds went by of silence, but our eyes locked in a loving stare. "You didn't have to take a punch for me."
"Of course I did," he said, pulling on my cheek until our foreheads touched. I closed my eyes and took in the feeling of Newt being this close to me. "I will always take a punch for you. I did it because... be-because I like you," he stuttered with nerves.
I held back a laugh and opened my eyes to see his already trained on me. "I know, Newt. You aren't that good at hiding it." He laughed, but his cheeks still filled with heat.
"So, does this mean you chose me over Gally?"
"There was never a choice. It was always you," I replied in a soft voice, so quiet I wasn't sure if he heard me. I knew he did though when he started leaning in closer.
"Can I kiss you?" He asked, staring at my lips. Butterflies arose in my stomach at the thought of his lips touching mine. I could only imagine how they would feel against mine. Nodding, I braced myself to actually get to know how it felt.
He closed the distance and placed his lips on mine, and they felt exactly how I had imagined: perfect.
