Newt's POV

Normally, I wasn't excited for the greenie bonfires. I would usually dread them, knowing the greenie that came with them would ask a million questions I wasn't able to answer. This would lead to the boy crying, yelling or running off, which only made my job as Second in Command that much harder. But this time, I couldn't be more excited.

It wasn't because of the bonfire itself, it was the greenie that came with it- the first girl to arrive: (Y/N).

When she came up in the box, she was like everyone else- crying her eyes out and scared of every boy who came near her- but she was so different. She calmed down quicker than any other boy, didn't demand answers to questions I couldn't answer and was as sweet as honey. She was scared, no doubt, but she stayed collected and respectful towards every boy who managed to sneak past me and greet her.

Plus, it was no secret how beautiful she was. When I mentioned it to Alby, he just said it was because she had been the first girl I'd ever seen. I knew that wasn't true. I could have seen every girl in the entire planet and none of them would compare to (Y/N).

It might have just been my mind playing tricks on me, but it seemed as if she connected with me more than the others. She was shy (understandable) and often used me as a shield from the others. She stayed close beside me and once even held my hand! Yes, I know I sound crazy but this girl was perfect.

Alby also laughed when I said that. He had sent (Y/N) off with Chuck since we thought the two of them would be the best pair (of course not as good as (Y/N) and I). We were busy setting up for the bonfire- gathering the wood and setting up all the boxes to be used as chairs- while I effused on and on about this new girl.

"I'm tellin' ya Alby," I said at the end of the long rant I made about her. "Were meant for each other. The creators sent her up here for me."

Alby rolled his eyes, shoving a stack of logs into my arms. He tuned me out probably a half an hour ago, since he had been hearing only about her from me ever since I met her. I just couldn't help it.

"I get it, you've fallen in love with the greenie," Alby said, obviously annoyed. "-but I'm tired of hearing about it. I sent Chuck with her so he wouldn't talk my shuckin' ears off but here you are. Just go... tell someone else about her."

The way he spoke to me he should have at least annoyed me, but I was too frozen by the word he used: love. I don't remember loving anything. I mean, I'm sure I loved parents, my siblings if I had any, maybe an old girlfriend- but I don't remember how to feel that. I don't know the first thing about loving someone.

I pushed that thought away and hurried to toss my stack into the pile to go find (Y/N) again. I didn't exactly know what I was feeling, but I knew I always wanted to be beside her.

Once I finished, I raced over to (Y/N) and Chuck who were waiting in line for dinner. She was listening to what Chuck was saying to be nice, but wasn't retaining any of it. She had changed her hair since I last saw her too; it was pulled to the side in a tight braid to keep it out of her face. All it did was accentuate the best parts of her face.

"H-hey (Y/N)," I cursed myself for sounding so nervous around her even though I was. "I was wondering... i-if you wanted to eat with me? And Chuck!" I quickly added. The younger boy had a long smirk on his face.

"Yeah, thank you," she replied with a soft tone. Her (Y/E/C) eyes were looking directly into mine. They were the most mesmerizing eyes I knew I had ever seen. The kind of eyes that you could get lost in, and forget about everything else around you.

"Uh, Newt?" Chuck asked, poking my side. I unintentionally glared down at the boy who nudged his head towards the kitchen, where there was a big gap in the food line. (Y/N) giggled and took a few steps further.

(Y/N) did sit with Chuck, Thomas, Minho and I for dinner but stayed relatively quiet. I had her sit next to me, which made Thomas and Minho hint at things I didn't really want them to in front of her. Instead, (Y/N) seemed completely oblivious to it. I couldn't lie when I said my arm filled with goosebumps when her shoulder would touch mine. It was pathetic how much of an effect she had on me in only a small amount of time. She would think I was crazy.

By the time dinner was over, the bonfire was ready. (Y/N), Chuck, and Thomas found a log to sit on while Minho and I were beginning the fire, like all Keepers do. Right after, I went over to (Y/N) and sat down right beside her.

"Want some?" I asked, waving my jar in front of her.

"No thank you," she politely declined, fixing her legs so they were laid out in front of her. We stayed in silence while watching the loud boys jump somewhere to the left of the wrestling ring where Gally was fighting another boy.

(Y/N) was focusing on the two boys who were banging on empty pots and containers, making music. A light smile came onto her face when she saw another boy get up and attempt to dance. Did she like that they were dancing?

"Hey she-bean," Minho greeted her with a loud voice so he could be heard over all the noise. "I noticed you eying those shanks. Care to dance?" She looked over at me before taking Minho's hand. He dragged her over towards the other boy and quickly introduced them. Minho started busting our crazy dance moves that drew a lot of attention, but mine was on (Y/N).

She wasn't dancing, but more of swaying along to the music. Even from here I could hear her gorgeous laugh as she watched Minho practically make a fool out of himself. God, she was so perfect. I swore then I would never see anything as beautiful.

That was when the word floated back into my head. Love. It was odd, but the thought of it now didn't seem so crazy. The thought of having that girl beside me at all times, protecting her like she is the sun in the sky. I shouldn't believe in love at first sight, but now I was.

Love. The word brought a smile to my face since I now knew what it meant. It meant her. It meant being with her, spending every day with her and never growing tired of her. Love wasn't the same as it was outside of the glade, we all knew things were different. But somehow I just knew I was in love with her. And I was going to do whatever it took to get her.
