The request was for Sam from Love Actually, which I had never seen before until yesterday so I hope it makes sense and that you like it! *"(Y/N), I have to tell you something," Sam said suddenly. We had been already halfway through our giant bowls of ice cream after my parents dropped me off with his stepfather to watch me for the day while they went out to work. Plus, both my parents and Daniel, his stepfather, thought maybe it would be a good idea for us to start hanging out again after his mother died to try and cheer him up.
"Sure. You can tell me anything," I reply, encouraging him to get it out. My parents told me something had been bothering him, other than the grief of his mother, so I was hoping he was going to open up to me now.
He took a deep breath before talking. "Well, the truth is, actually... I'm in love." I unintentionally dropped the spoon in my hand, sending off a loud clinking sound when it hit the glass bowl.
"Love?" I asked in a wavering voice. How could he be in love?
"I know you probably think I'm too young, but I'm not. I love her but she doesn't even know my name," he continued to stir the ice cream around in his bowl without looking up at me, which if he did, he probably would have been confused by the look on my face.
Love. It's not that I thought he was too young to be in love, because I knew somebody younger who was in love too. I was in love with Sam.
It stung like lemon juice on a paper cut when he said it. How could he be in love with somebody who doesn't even know him? Doesn't he have to see the person? Know the person? Talk to the person to feel such deep feelings like love? I guess that wasn't always the case.
"What's her name?" I asked trying to hide the fluctuating of my voice as tears filled the back of my eyes. I swallowed them quickly so that he wouldn't see them.
"Joanna," he said breathlessly with a dreamy look in his eyes as he set his chin in his hand. "She's the most beautiful girl in school and practically every boy likes her too. But she's the one." He lifted his index finger before smiling brightly and putting his hands down.
"You already know she's the one?" I asked. Maybe I could get it in his head that there were other girls out there who actually know his name and love him for himself- aka me.
"I know she is. It's fate too that her names the same as mum's. It's like she wants me to know that she's the one for me." We finished eating our ice cream in silence before my parents arrived at the door to pick me up. I said a quick goodbye to Sam and rushed out to my car.
My mother saw my face from the front seat and spun around with her hand out for me to hold. "Hey, what's the matter?"
I took my mother's hand and stared out of the window of the car. "Sam's in love, but not with me."
-----
Sam told me the brilliant plan him and his father came up with to woo Joanna. He would perform with her as the drummer in the schools Christmas show, that way she'll have to know who he is. His father taught him with every free second they had how to play the drums since he didn't know.
Today was the day of the show, and my mother came along with me to watch. My mother knew all about my feelings for Sam and believed that one day Sam would see that Joanna wasn't the one for him, but that I was.
Once the lights went down and her song began, I searched the stage of performers for Sam who was sitting closer to the back with a large drum kit around him. He was actually playing pretty good, but spent most of his time staring at Joanna as she danced around the stage.
