Third person POV

Newt woke up on the day of his 17th birthday with the quick realization that it was his birthday. Newt shoved the covers out of the way so he could leap towards the closest mirror in his house. He stood in front of the tall mirror with his eyes closed because he was too scared to look.

He had waited years for this day, yet his fear was taking over now that the day was here. He would rather live the rest of his life not knowing the symbol or his soulmate rather than finding this girl. As selfish and guilty as he felt, he didn't want her.

Newt took a deep breath before finally peeling open his eyelids, where his eyes immediately darted towards the new patch of black ink carved onto the right side of his chest.

He felt a mix of emotions the second he recognized the item his tattoo represented. He wanted to scream over the fact that he hated the object. He wanted to cry knowing that this symbol would be hard to ignore in his life. He wanted to laugh over the irony of his tattoo. He felt relieved that he finally knew what the damn symbol was. But overall, Newt wasn't sure how he could find his soulmate through the soccer ball tattoo carved on his body.

-----

When Newt told his friends of his tattoo, they attempted to hide their giggles but eventually gave in and laughed right in his face. As soon as Minho taunted him about the tattoo, Newt was quick to remark about the fact that Minho met his soulmate when she smashed a book into his foot- that quickly shut him up.

He didn't tell anybody else except for his parents and his younger sister who were just as excited as his friends were to find out. His parents were happy for his tattoo, and agreed with each other that it was perfect since that was Newt's hobby outside of school. They thought it would be like hitting two birds with one stone- Newt could keep playing the sport that he loved and find his soulmate while doing so. It was this reason that his parents declined when he begged to quit the team.

(Y/N) didn't ask him about his tattoo like he thought she would. Newt thought she would want to know what his tattoo- and possibly wish that was what hers would be in a month. For now, he would hide the tattoo from his best friend so that it never seemed he was tied to someone, that way (Y/N) had every right to be with him.

The next two months of Newt's young life were spent on edge as he practically ran from every girl who tried to make contact with him. At every game he would run from the field to the lockers and then to his car without any interaction from a female at all. He didn't want to find his soulmate so he couldn't talk to any girls.

It wasn't too hard to keep his tattoo a secret either, since there was never a reason for him to be shirtless in front of (Y/N). He would change in either the comfort of his home- without (Y/N)- or inside the locker rooms- also without (Y/N). He did panic though whenever his door opened, even if it was just his dog.

Newt had everything under control with his plan to keep him from meeting his soulmate, until the night of their big game.

The boys had already changed into their uniforms and were pumping themselves up for their game while the girls filled the stands to watch. The girls wore their school colors in each item of clothing to show off the pride they felt for the school and the boys. Brenda even went as far as to draw war paint in the schools colors on her cheeks.

The game had started and most of the students in the stands were always on their feet to cheer for the boys, since they were leading against the opposing team by only 2 points. The girls joined the cheerleaders at the bottom of the stands in their cheers to help energize the boys on the field.
