Thank you so much for being so patient with me because I know this has taken a really long time to be posted. I'm so sorry but thank you for sending it in! I hope you like it! *"You two are always doing that," Zart whined from his kneeling position on the ground. He was complaining about the kiss Newt and I were sharing after we first greeted each other. After eating breakfast together, this time in the gardens was our second reunion of the morning, not that it was any less special.
"It's not my fault I have the best girl to agree to date me," Newt smirked while looping his arm around my waist. Giggling, I gently pushed on his chest to block some of the red spreading to my cheeks.
We weren't a new couple- we had been together for almost four months- but we still were in the 'puppy-love phase' where we couldn't get enough of each other.
The boys, although growing tired, were used to the constant kisses shared between us or the adorable complements that were thrown at random times. It was our small piece of happiness that unfortunately, the other boys wouldn't be able to experience without any other girls around.
"I have to help the greenie today, but as soon as I'm done, I'll come to you." Newt had to do this every month when the new arrival came, and today happened to be Box day. It was an exciting day for me, but a long one for Newt.
"Fine with me," I replied, pecking a quick kiss to his lips. On cue, the grinding of gears drew our attention to the box. The blaring alarm rang over the gears, indicating that the Box had arrived.
"I'll see you later love," Newt said before rushing off to join the others at the Box. He was the first person most of us see when we arrive- myself included- because he was the most calming leader in the Glade. The rest of us weren't allowed to be beside the Box when it opened, for fear of overwhelming the boy with thirty pairs of eyes staring down at him. We learned the hard way that some of them can get aggressive.
The gladers who weren't a Keeper or leader like Newt and Alby, continued with our jobs as if the day was normal, but everyone snuck glances at the greenie as he would walk by. Newt waved to me as he and the greenie passed by the gardens, which was the first stop on the tour.
The greenie ignored everything Newt was saying as he stared at me and I stared back. It wasn't that he was attractive, but there was a sense of familiarity as I looked at him. I know I had seen him before, the facial features were a messed up image in my head- like someone took a picture of him and blurred it out.
Newt noticed the greenie suddenly wasn't beside him, and was walking towards me, so he chased after him. I stood frozen in place, wishing that any of this made sense to me. He stopped right in front of me where his lips curled into a smile.
"Hi," he said and held out his hand. "It's me, (Y/N)." Newt stood beside me now, making sure the distance between us was less than the one between me and the newbie.
"How do you know my name?" I asked, hesitantly shaking his hand.
"(Y/N)," the greenie half chuckled to hide his disappointment. "I'm your brother."
-----
Two months later and my brother, who's name was Jeff, was beginning to act like the older brother he was. Alby and Newt (and a part of me for a while) were unbelieving of his accusation, but after a dream I had of the two of us from when we were younger, I knew he was right.
He had taken the big brother role too seriously, and even though it was nice to have that part of my life given back to me, he was practically choking me.
After he resumed the tour with Newt on his first day, he was given the job as Med-jack where he would heal any injured or sick boys alongside a boy named Clint. Unfortunately, Jeff didn't think it was safe having me work in the gardens everyday. He worried about my health in the heat of the glade mixed with some of the rigorous labor the job had me doing. He demanded Alby change my job to match his, where I could work indoors all day right at his side. Alby wasn't too keen on the idea, but knew that blood trumps water, so let the switch happen.
Newt was furious with the idea, but he was sadly only Second in Command, not first, so he couldn't fight it. It's not that we didn't see each other anymore, but our time together was limited to breaks, meals, and the short time between the end of work and nighttime.
Then Jeff came up with a schedule. It was a list of each of the times I was allowed to be with Newt, and it had to be in public. No sneaking off to the woods, or being alone in our rooms- it was either in the Homestead in front of the other boys, or with a designated chaperone Jeff agreed upon. The amount of times Clint had to follow us somewhere was getting into the hundreds.
Every time we mentioned privacy to Alby, since he still was the leader and could tell Jeff exactly what to do, he claimed he had no right to step in. Jeff was my older brother, so he could make his own decisions about his younger sister, no matter how unreasonable they are.
"I only have five minutes before he comes out of the bathroom," I said, out of breath from the run I just did to get from the bathrooms to the gardens where Newt was. I had only a few minutes where we could be alone so we were gonna take it however we could get it.
"This is ridiculous," Newt groaned while tugging on my hand to pull me towards the woods. He stopped me when we were far enough in to not be seen, but to keep a look out in case we saw Jeff coming. "I wanna be able to kiss my bloody girlfriend whenever I feel like, not having to run around to hide from her brother."
"I know Newt, I'm sorry." I wrapped my arms around his torso and rested my head against his chest. Just a few minutes of silence in his arms would mean the world to me.
"(Y/N)!" Jeff barked as he exited the bathrooms. I groaned and pressed my lips to Newt's as a quick goodbye. I had only made two steps when Newt grabbed my wrist, stopping me from moving forward any more.
"No," he hissed. "I'm done with this. You were my girlfriend before he came up here and I won't let him do this to us anymore."
Newt linked our fingers together as he marched us out of the woods and towards Jeff, who was searching the glade for me. His eyes widened when he saw Newt and I leaving the woods with our hands together.
"I told you you can't go in there alone with him. You have to go with-" Jeff began but Newt quickly cut him off.
"You don't get to boss us around." Newt yelled, causing Jeff to jump in shock. He had been here a couple months, and had never needed to be yelled at by one of the leaders.
"I get that she's your sister, but she is my girlfriend and I am allowed to be with her. I'm telling you this as a friend and not as Second in Command, but Jeff this has to stop. I love her and there is no need for you to keep her on a bloody leash."
Jeff had took a small step back while lowering his head. "I know. I just... I worry about her. I can't remember our parents, but I remember her. I have her," he came up to me and put his hand on my shoulder, "and I don't want to lose her."
"You won't lose me," I said hugging him tightly. He warmed up to the hug, allowing himself to hold onto my torso.
"I'll stop being such a shank now. I'll leave you two alone. But I still don't want any nieces or nephews." He laughed when I playfully slapped his shoulder.
"Thanks man." Newt and Jeff shared the weird guy hug, where neither of them tried to show any emotion in it, before Jeff left to go back to work.
Newt slipped his hand back around my waist, pulling me into his chest. "I can get used to this."
I would spend the rest of our days in the glade with an overprotective brother and a just as protective boyfriend keeping me safe. There was nothing more I could ask for than the two of them.
