NITRO - STRONG

I activated a fistful of pure light energy, the training robot dropping down and preparing for a duel.

"Select level."
The machine called.

"The highest one."
I challenged.

"Level One."
It misunderstood.

"No-!"
I yelled, but the robot came at me anyways. I caught it by the face with my hand, my eyes turning white and my fingers sinking through the metal, steaming.

It fell through a gap the floor opened up.

"Select level."

"Level three?"
I wasn't sure how high the levels went. I'll find out, I guess.

This went on for hours. It wasn't always just me burning through them, though. Occasionally, I'd get hit. Then I'd slash back and destroy them, demanding a level up for the next robot.

Keith walked in, and I finished up my robot quickly.

Swiping the sweat from my brow, I nodded a greeting at Keith.

"Nitro, what level was that?"

I shrugged.
"I stopped counting after I got to double digits."

"Double digits? You should take a break. You've been training since morning. And, you missed your meals again."

"How long has it been?"

"Like a whole two days. You should eat. I'm getting worried, Nitro. Is everything okay?"

How was I supposed to tell him?

"Keith... I just need to be alone."

His beautiful eyes looked hurt.
"No you don't."

"What was that?"
I raised my voice.

"You don't have to be alone. Trust me, being alone... it doesn't help ease the pain. We're here for you, Nitro. I'm here for you."

He said that word again.

Trust.

"Keith..."
I wrapped him into a hug.

He seemed surprised at first, but quickly obliged. He stroked my back, and I held him tight.

"Tell me what happened."
He said softly.

It was silent for a long time.

"Nitro-"
He started.

"Spazz died."
I forced out quickly.

He fell silent.

"I'm sorry. He was a good guy. You always seemed so happy with him."

I smiled weakly.
"Funny. He said the same thing about you."

"Did he really?"

"Yeah."
I traced circles into Keith's shoulder blade, just because it seemed to help. Just a little bit.

"What else did he say?"

"He said to promise him something."

"What was it?"

"I had to be strong."

"Is that why you were training so hard? Just because he-"

"I promised, Keith."

He sighed after a while.
"Anything else?"

I hesitated.
"He said he loved me."

Keith stopped breathing all together. His grip tightened.
"And what did you say?"

"I didn't say anything."

"Why not?"

"Because I didn't love him back."
Tears threatened to spill again.

Not here. Not in front of Keith.

Stop that, you fool. He's going to see you cry. He's going to know how weak you are...

"Oh... Nitro... don't cry... it's okay..."
He tried to assure me, but it was too late now.

Large drops slid down my face now, uncontrollable tears.

"No... no... shh... you're okay..."

Keith got freaked out.

He carried me to his room, and wrapped me up in blankets. Keith held me close, as I cried into his chest. I was so ashamed.

"Nitro... don't cry..."

That only made me cry harder.

"No... don't..."

He was trying so hard to fix things.

I felt horrible. Poor Keith.

"I killed him, Keith."
I sobbed.

"No, you didn't. You would never..."

"I let him die. I let him go."

"Nitro, it's not your fault."

"And I broke my promise..."

He lifted my chin with his finger.
"No. You're the strongest person I've ever known. It's okay to cry. It just means you've been strong too long. You need to know that."

Keith wiped the corners of my eyes with his thumbs, smiling sadly.
"My beautiful (y/n). How can you still be so beautiful even when you're crying?"

I sniffed, slowly calming down.
"I trust you, Keith."

He leaned forward, pressing a gentle kiss against my lips.

"I trust you, too."
He whispered, and I'd never felt so loved in my entire life.
