11. Rory's Dance (Season 1, Episode 9)
The first episode to really explore the damage done by Lorelai's adolescent mistakes, Rory's dance sees both Emily and Lorelai's reaction to what they believe is Rory repeating those mistakes. Emily lashes out at Lorelai, insisting that she is responsible for her daughter's perceived missteps. Lorelai immediately jumps to defend herself and her daughter, but then lashes out as well. This episode moves Rory's relationship with Dean forward, while at the same time developing the family dynamic that the show is built on.
High points: Rory and Dean's awkward high school relationship, Dean standing up to Tristan, traditional Gilmore drama, Emily taking care of Lorelai when she hurt her back, banana toast
Low points: Rory's inability to see the situation from anyone else's point of view
