54. Pilot (Season 1,episode 1)
This is an above average episode, but it's not great. That's understandable though. Most shows take a while to find their footing, and this show found it quicker than most. And with all the set up and back story necessary to move the rest of the show, this was a lot of stuff to cram into one episode, and its actually a miracle that it's as good as it is. This episode is a great introduction to the eclectic characters in Stars Hollow and does a good job of balancing the information overload with the comedy that we can come to expect in later episodes. It's not the best, but it's certainly not the worst and it deserves a pretty high spot on the list, if only because it was the episode that started it all!
High points: The fabulous first scene, which sets up Lorelai's love of coffee, her relationship with Luke, and the dynamic with Rory. A wonderful introduction to Lane, Mrs. Kim, Sookie, and Michel.
Low points: We're starting off very early on Rory's immaturity. And can we all agree that Emily's hair is a little off in this episode?
