65. The Reigning Lorelai(Season 4, episode 16)
Gran dies, leaving Richard a mess. Emily finds a letter from Gran to Richard, asking him to leave Emily at the altar. Emily freaks out and decides she's not going to help plan the funeral. We learn more about Emily and why Richard's mother hated her so much and why they had such a strained relationship. It makes us appreciate Emily just a little bit more for everything she's gone through.
High points: Emily and Richard's problems are hard to watch, but it helps us understand them. Lorelai shopping for underwear for her dead grandmother, Gran and her husband were related
Low points: Rory is super selfish in this episode. She's freaking out because she can't cry and she doesn't feel bad enough, but that just means she's in a better position to help Emily and Richard, who are clearly worse off than she is.
