5. Rory's Birthday Parties (Season 1, Episode 6)

This episode is a first in many respects. It's the first time we see Rory stand up to Emily, proving to Emily that she is more like her mother than she might have hoped. It's the first time Richard and Emily visit Lorelai and Rory in Stars Hollow. It's a huge step in their relationship and allows Richard and Emily to see where they ended up. You can see on their faces an intriguing mixture of pride at the life that Lorelai had created for herself, while at the same time being saddened by the fact that she so quickly abandoned their life of luxury for this smaller life. And Emily's final line, the heartbreaking "I don't know my daughter at all", is the first realization that Emily has that Lorelai truly has left their life, and sets up the relationship for the rest of the series.

High points: Emily's first introduction to Lorelai's world, more quirky Stars Hollow-ness

Low points: The use of that insufferable "Happy Birthday" song, Tristan at his most obnoxious, Paris at her most obnoxious

Best quote: "You're pleased that the ice man looked at you like a porterhouse steak."- Emily
