Frederick was sleeping peacefully next to his mother in bed his long sliver ears twitching at the sound of movement close by, then a paw tapped him lightly on the shoulder, "Hey Frederick it's morning wake up!" he hears his older brother say. Frederick buries his face in his paws letting out a long sigh. "Denny I'm tired."
"Come on sleepy head, Shawn and Scarlet are already up." He slowly opened his eyes to look at his older brother he was a normal colour Eevee like Shawn while their little sister Scarlet was a shiny like him.
But Frederick had never seen himself as any different from Shawn and Denny.
Suddenly he got pushed off the bed by Denny and he landed on the floor of the den. "Hey!" Denny chuckled at Frederick. "Hehe well it's about time you got up"
"Denny." Mother cut in.
"You shouldn't push your brother out of bed like that." Frederick smiled "Exacly now if you'll excuse me I'm going back to bed."
But before he could climb back up Julie blocked him with her leafy tail. "Not so fast Frederick I do agree with Denny it's nearly noon you've slept enough." she got up herself and stretched.
"Now remember what I told you kids about playing outside?" They both nodded their heads.
"Yeah we know don't go too far from the den and stay away from the river we got it, Mom," Denny answered. Frederick rolled his eyes Denny is the oldest of them but it still ruffles his fur seeing him act like it's his responsibility to look out for them, he kind of gets annoying that way. He gave Frederick a friendly nudge. "Come on let's go see what Shawn and Scarlet are up to."
"Or, or maybe we don't and go exploring," Frederick said with a mischievous smile but Denny only shook his head. "Hmm yeah, nice try Frederick you know we're not supposed to go far."
"Come on Denny! Why are you such goody paws?"
"Hey, I'm no such thing! Take that back"
Frederick held his gaze and smiled playfully.
"Ok, then prove me wrong and let's go exploring."
"We will don't think you're the only Mon who wants to see the other side of the river Frederick, we just need to wait a few more weeks and Scarlet is still pretty small don't forget"
He rolled his eyes "Because she's the baby of the family!"
"Exactly and that's why we should wait."
"Well you know, I'm the second oldest, why don't we just-"
"No, Scarlet is a tattletale if she or Shawn catch us we're both in trouble." Frederick sighed in defeat and followed Denny out of the den and into the daylight. He felt a rush of excitement as the sun shone brightly and it felt good on his sliver fur.
"Hey, there you guys are!" Shawn ran over to them excitedly.
"Denny you finally managed to wake him up eh?" he nodded. Frederick felt annoyed as Shawn suddenly tackled him.
"Tage your it!" before he knew it Shawn and Denny were both already speeding off.
"Arg Shawn! I don't want to be it! I'm not playing this game!" their younger sister Scarlet who was hiding behind a big rock suddenly peaked her little sliver head out.
"Come on Frederick we all have to take a turn to be it! It's not fair otherwise."
"Did you not hear me? I'm not playing this game!"
But everyone ignored him and continued to hide.
Frederick inhaled a deep breath.
'Ok that's fine I'll tag Scarlet and then when it's my turn to hide I'll sneak away and go on a little adventure.'
He bolted toward her and right away she gave a little Squeak of surprise and tried to run but Frederick was faster. He jumped on her forgetting how small she is compared to him as she gave a loud yelp.
"Tage now your it!" He teased.
"Frederick you're too heavy! Get off!" feeling embarrassed he got up.
"Err sorry sis."
"Momma! Momma!"
Denny and Shawn both ran out from their hiding places and Denny hissed at her.
"Jeeze Scarlet he said sorry do you have to be a little nark all the time?"
"Take that back Denny!"
Julie came out.
"What's going on here?"
"Momma Frederick crushed me! And then Denny called me a nark!" she cried as she ran to go huge Mother.
"WHAT!" Denny exclaimed looking outrageous.
Julie glared at all three of them. "How many times do I have to tell you boys not to be so rough with your little sister?" Shawn looked surprised. "But Mom I didn't do anything! That was Frederick." Denny shot a glare at Shawn. "Nicely said Shawn!"
"Denny! That's no way to talk to your slidings, now apologize to Scarlet!"
Frederick felt awkward he knows as much as Denny tries to look out for them, he always tries to have his back whenever he's in trouble.
Denny frowned as Scarlet stuck her tongue out at him. "Ok, I'm sorry I called you a nark."
"Even though it's true" He muttered under his breath. "Denny I heard that be nice to your little sister you only have one after all, so be grateful." Frederick sheepishly approached Scarlet to apologize.
"I'm sorry I crushed you, Scarlet, sometimes I forget my own size when I'm around you that's all."
She smiled at him. "Apology accepted Frederick." Julie was still standing there. "I swear to Arceus if you kids can't get along then you'll all be sitting inside the den for the rest of the whole day are we clear?"
They all nodded their heads.
"Yes, Mother." they all replied together.
"Good, now I better not have to come back out, Denny you're the oldest keep an eye on them and make sure everyone behaves." He stood tall looking proud. "Of course, Mother you can count on me."
"Ah jeez," Frederick muttered under his breath. He had to admit to himself sometimes he envied Denny for being the oldest, Dad even started taking him out for late hunting lessons that Frederick doesn't get to be a part of yet because he's a few days younger.
Then Denny caught his eye so he quickly faked a smile hoping he hadn't noticed the sour look he had on his face.
"Hmm, you know what I think it might be better to play a different game," Denny suggested.
"Oh, oh! Let's play hide and seek!" Scarlet called excitedly. Shawn waved his tail excitedly. "Good idea! Denny, Frederick you want to play?"
Frederick sighed "Sure." then he noticed that they were all staring at him now.
"Hey, Frederick are you alright?" Shawn asked.
"Of course, I am why would you ask?"
"Well, it doesn't really look like you want to play," Denny said. Frederick glanced at the forest toward the river he felt bad. 'I'm not meaning to kill the mood here because I really don't want to play. What I really want is to go exploring but if I say that now it might just cause an argument and I don't want that either'
Denny padded over to his side. "Come on Frederick we talked about this already, all in good time we'll get to go exploring," He said. "That's easy for you to say I bet Dad already showed you a good amount of the forest." He looked taken aback by that remark.
"I didn't ask to hatch first and look at you, at least you're a shiny what more do you want?"
Frederick turned toward him with a growl.
"Frederick stop it can't you see how selfish your being? Don't you want to play with us?"
He paused seeing hurtful glances coming from Shawn and Scarlet.
"Denny's right Frederick I'm the youngest so how do you think I feel? You should quit pouting." Scarlet added.
Feeling embarrassed he apologizes to them and agrees to play the game.
'It's not like I don't want to spend time with them, it would be cool if we could all go,
"Not it!" Scarlet was the first to call. "Not it!"
Frederick called next. "Not it!" Denny was right after him.
"Ah, shucks, I guess I'm it," Shawn said.
"Ok, I'll count to ten while you guys all hide."
"No, make it twenty!" Scarlet chimed.
"Ok, twenty it is, anything else before I start counting?" Denny and Frederick both shook their heads.
"Alright, then I'm gonna start counting."
Shawn covered his eyes with his two front paws and started. "One... Two... Three."
"Come on guys Hurry!"  Scarlet squeaked excitedly and ran off. "Scarlet wait! Remember you need to stay close to the Den!"
Denny called out running after her.
Fredrick couldn't help but smirk seeing Denny run after her knowing his concern about her being the smallest of them.
This was his chance to sneak away, technology he wasn't ditching them he just so happen to know a very good hiding spot was all, plus he wouldn't be gone too long anyway he planned on being back before they even notice he left at all.
Frederick quickly run through the clearing and dashed into the thicker undergrowth where he knows they were not allowed to go.
As soon as he got to the first bush he dived in and peeked his head out hoping that Denny didn't see him then as soon as he was sure no Mon saw him he continued onward through the thick undergrowth pushing his way through shrubs and trees.
Then he lifted his muzzle and sniffed the air. He could smell water.
Feeling his fur tingle with excitement he keeps going then he can hear it and then finally, he could see it.
'Yes! I've made it!'
He approaches the water's edge, cautiously scanning the clearing to make sure no other Mons were around. Frederick looked around curiously trying to see what was on the other side but the the undergrowth was too thick to see through. Feeling stumped he kept looking around until his eyes land on something a fallen down tree that went straight across the lake that could be used as a bridge.
"I can't believe my luck!" he mused out loud due to his excitement.
He doesn't hesitate to jump on the tree log and confidently walks across and jumps down once he reaches the other side. He felt his heart beat with excitement as the wind blows through his fur and all the new scents he could smell with it as he sniffed the air. 'This is the best feeling in the world! I feel so free!'
But that feeling goes away as he noticed a pair of yellow eyes glowing through the darkness of the trees. "Who goes there!" it suddenly growled and he pins his ears back fearfully.
'Oh no, what was I thinking! I should have listened to Denny! Now this Mon might eat me!'
