Chapter 3 A New Friend

Frederick stood frozen in fear where he was. His paws felt as though they were rooted to the ground. Not daring to take his eyes off the other Mon not knowing what else to do. 'If I run they'll catch me but if I don't...'
He closed his eyes feeling scared. 'Oh, Arceus help me!'
Then the other Mon stepped out Revealing himself to be a Poochyena, a kid about the same age as him.
"Hey, there I mean no harm," he said in a more friendly tone. Frederick was so relieved that he felt dizzy and then embarrassed. "Oh, heh nah I wasn't scared, you just startled me is all."
He tilted his head to one side. "Oh really? It didn't look that way to me."
Then he took Frederick by surprise as he sniffed him.
"Who are you? How come we never met before?" He asked. "Oh, pardon me, my name is Frederick." He waged his tail looking happy. "Well there it sure is nice to meet you, Frederick, I'm Lupin, let's be friends!" Frederick suddenly felt happy and proud.
'I did it! I made it across the river and the first thing I do is make a new friend!'
"Freinds!" He replied placing out his paw which he shook eagerly. "So Frederick, where is your den?" He asked curiously and he answered him.
"Oh, I actually live on the other side of this river, that's why we never met before this is my first time across."
"Hmm I see, hey, would you like to meet my pack?" Now Frederick was feeling uncomfortable knowing well aware that a full-size Mightyena would try to eat him.
'And what would my parents say if they found out I even came this far alone? I'd be in so much trouble that's for sure'
"I err I don't know about Lupin," He replies.
"Oh, come on! they're not that bad, plus we've never seen a shiny before my dad would be very pleased to meet you."
"Yeah, I bet he would."
"You can trust me Frederick no Mon will hurt you because you're my friend."
"Well... I suppose if you say so." as Fredrick was about to follow him a voice called out.
"Frederick no!" He paused as Denny jumped down from the tree log. He suddenly felt panic and frustration at the same time he had not noticed Denny approaching them. "Arg! Denny what are you doing here!" He snapped. "I could ask you the same thing! You know we're not supposed to be here, and besides that fact, I can't believe you actually ditch us like that!"
He sniffed him. "We were looking all over for you, luckily I had a good idea of where to start and it's a good thing I caught you! You were really gonna go with this Poochyena to his pack!"
Lupin tilted his head to one side. "Is he your brother?" Frederick nodded "Yeah his name is Denny."
"Cool, I'm Lupin." Denny however didn't look very interested in meeting the Poochyena.
"Thanks for the introduction, Frederick now it's time to go home."
"WHAT?" He explained angrily.
"Just because you're older than me doesn't mean you get to tell me what to do!"
"I'm only looking out for you! If you go to that Poochyena's pack they'll eat you up as a quick snack now quit acting stupid!" He scolded at him. Frederick's ears drooped down. "Are you gonna tell Mom and Dad?" Denny seemed to relax his gaze softening. "I'll keep this one a secret as long as you promise me this won't happen again. Now let's go, Shawn and Scarlet, are still looking for us, we should get back before they do tell on us." Lupin looked excited. "You have two more siblings?"
Denny's tail flickered with annoyance. "Umm yeah."
"Oh that's great I always wanted to have friends! You should all come back tomorrow!"
Fredrick felt excited about that idea. "Hey, that would be fun!"
"Umm I hate to break it to you Lupin but we're not allowed to cross the river to see you, our parents would ground us if they even found out about where we are now," Denny said, in an icy tone. Lupin's tail drooped behind him. "Oh, that's too bad, why don't you ask your parents?" Frederick felt bad knowing already that they would definitely say no.
"They don't want us near the water at all because moons ago before we were born a stranger had pushed our Mother into the river and she almost drowned."
"Oh, well what are the odds of that happening again? And besides it's not like anyone would do that on purpose" Denny now looked impatient.
"Yeah well try explaining that to our Dad, now if you don't mind me and Frederick must be going, we were in the middle of a game."
As Frederick was about to follow Denny suddenly the shrubs shook and a huge full-size Mightyena came out. "Lupin there you are we were looking all over for you-" He broke off as he noticed Frederick and Denny both just staring up at him with wide shocked eyes. Frederick was too stiff to move and his heart was pounding so fast he thought his chest might explode as the fur along his spine stood on end.
'What do we do? Do we run? Do we hide? Can we even getaway?
Denny leaned close to him and whispered in his ear. "Oh, Frederick, we took too long to leave! He's going to eat us now." He sounded scared which made Fredrick feel more scared realizing how real the situation was.
The Mightyena grew a big smile and then laughed.
"Hehe well, Lupin it looks like you made new friends!"
"Quick Frederick Run!!" Denny shouted in fear but as they turned back towards the tree bridge the Mightyena jumped in front of them. "Whoa! wait I'm not going to eat you! It's ok I'm Lupin's father I'm Mike." Denny and Fredrick both finally relaxed letting out sighs of relief.
Lupin's tail waged excitedly again.
"Hey, Dad can they come over to the pack with us?" Mike looked uncertain though.
"Hmm, I don't know where are your parents?"
He asked them and Frederick answered.
"Oh, we live across the river."
"And we were just about to go home, we really should be going," Denny added.
"Maybe I should go with you, you two seem a bit small to be wandering around the forest alone." Denny and Frederick both shared panicked expressions.
"Umm That's ok we don't live far from here we'll be fine," Frederick said reassuringly. But the Mightyena still didn't look convinced.
"Dad they don't want you to take them home because they'll get in trouble, they're not supposed to be here!" Now Mike looked worried. "Well, now I have to take them home!"
Frederick slightly felt annoyed with Lupin he just got them in trouble.
"Way to go Lupin!" Denny scoffed.
The Poochyena's ears drooped. "I'm sorry I was only trying to help you guys."
"Yeah well, your big mouth just got us in trouble!" Denny retorted hotly.
"Hey don't blame my son for your actions! He's doing the right thing by telling me, two Eevees as small as you two should not be out in the forest alone. What would you do if a Noctowl tried to swoop you up huh?" Fredrick suddenly turned his attention to the trees he had not been thinking of predators at all when he was venturing off alone.
"Come along now, I'm sure your parents must be looking for you." Denny and Frederick followed him silently, without another word, both their tails dragging on the grass behind them. "Great see this is why I kept telling you, Frederick! Now you got me in trouble." Denny hissed.
"Hey, I didn't tell you to follow me!" He snapped back. Denny let out a sigh. "I was only looking out for you." Frederick rolled his eyes he didn't need Denny to look after him it always irritated him whenever Denny acted like they were his responsibility. Then, at last, they arrived home.
Frederick felt his heart sink seeing his Mother waiting at the den entrance looking worried then she turned her brown gaze on them with a new look of relief. She ran over to them.
"Oh, thank Arceus! I was looking all over for you two!" Then she looked at Mike.
"I can't thank you enough where were they?" she asked. Mike dipped his head politely. "They were on the other side of the lake, I found them with my kid."
"WHAT!" Julie exclaimed looking shocked. Frederick flinched feeling nervous seeing how upset his Mother was with them.
She turned a sharp glare on them. "Both of you in the den now! You're grounded!"
"But Mom I-" She cut Denny off. "I don't want to hear it! You'll both have to explain yourselves to your Father when he gets back from hunting."
Now Frederick felt scared Richard can be very intimidating when he gets angry.
Once they got inside they were met by Scarlet and Shawn.
"Well, well look who's in trouble now!" Scarlet said with a smug look on her face.
Denny growled. "Shut up Scarlet!"
"Where did you guys run off to?" Shawn asked looking upset. "We got worried about you."
"So, you're the one who narked this time Shawn?" Denny asked. "It's not his fault! you're the ones who ditched us!" Scarlet backed him up.
Shawn held Denny's stare. "You're the one who always tells us to stay near the den bro, you're such a hypocrite."
"Guys it wasn't Denny's fault! I'm the one who snuck away." Frederick said then felt same wash over him for ditching them.
'Even Denny is mad at me because I got him in trouble
"Well if you don't want to play with us then next time just say so!" Scarlet hissed.
"I don't understand how you don't get nervous you know there are predators out there?" Shawn asked. "Yes well... I didn't think of that," Frederick admitted.
Shawn frowned. "Well, maybe you'll start thinking of that now because there are Mons who won't hesitate to eat you."
"Ugg Shawn we know that!" Denny snapped.
"That's why I went after him."
"Your brave Denny, If I were you I would have gone to get Dad."
Scarlet frowned "I agree with Shawn I hope you two learned your lesson, but next time, please don't ditch us." Denny looked annoyed as he cast a side glance at Frederick. "Ok, I'm sorry I ditched everyone, I just really wanted to explore is all."
Then Richard padded inside and glanced at Shawn and Scarlet.
"You two go outside I need to speak to those two alone." Shawn and Scarlet both padded out together and now Frederick's ears drooped down he met Denny's gaze to see he was just as scared as he was.
"I'm sorry I got you into this Denny," he murmured. But Denny made no response.
Frederick swallowed nervously, as their Father sat down in front of them.
"look at me!" He growled and Fredrick forced himself to meet his Father's red stare.
"I wanna know what you two were thinking why did you take off today?"
Denny's voice was shaky "B-but Dad  I didn't do anything I was just looking out for Frederick." Richard growled "And what could you have done if that Mightyena was a threat? Hu?" Denny had a few tears in his eyes. "I'm sorry Father I just didn't like the idea of Fredrick being alone"
"Then next time it happens you come and tell me right away! Got it?" Denny nodded his head then Richard turns his sharp glare on Fredrick next. "Why did you wander off like that?" He demanded.
Frederick's heart pounded in his chest and he felt scared to answer. "Umm, I wanted to explore?" he said feeling nervous about how his Dad would react to it. Richard shook his head disapprovingly. "you know pretty darn well that your not to go near the Lake let alone wander away from the den it's too dangerous, what if you run into a predator Pokemon? An Eevee as small as you are likely to get taken away, I'm only telling you this because I love you."
Frederick looked at his paws and a few tears ran down his cheeks. He felt bad "I'm sorry Dad it won't happen again I promise"
"Good I hope so"
"What about Lupin?" Frederick asked, "Can we still go see him?" Richard shook his head "Not until you are old enough to swim and you're both grounded you're not allowed to go outside for the next couple of days"
Denny shot his head up "What but that's not fair! Frederick was the one who took off. I didn't do anything!"
Richard growled "Don't you mouth off to me! You both are grounded and that's Final!" Then he padded outside.
Denny let out a sigh. "Well, this is just great! There's nothing to do inside, you wanted to go exploring, so do you think it was worth it now?" he asked, sitting down in bed. Frederick was hesitant to answer because he didn't have any regret meeting Lupin.
"I'm sorry I got you in trouble, Denny, I just couldn't help it." His only response was to grunt. Frederick padded over to the den entrance to see that the sun was going down and it would be time for bed soon. He padded back towards Denny.
"We could play I, Spy."
"That game is so boring!" Frederick frowned; he was just trying to change the mood.
Julie padded inside. "Ok, it's time for supper and then it's off to bed ok?" They both nodded and padded outside to join the others for supper.
Once they were done eating they all went to bed.
As Frederick lay down in his bed he couldn't help feeling bad about getting Denny into trouble and he knew that he was still mad at him about it which upset him more.
But then to his surprise, Denny laid down beside him.
"So any ideas for tomorrow Frederick? Since we're both grounded."
He gave his older brother a puzzled look.
"I thought you'd still be mad at me?"
"Well, I was at first but I'm over it now, besides things could have gone much worse I'm just glad I got to you in time."
Frederick smiled.
Then Scarlet and Shawn came to bed.
"Momma, can you tell us a story? I can't sleep."
Scarlet complained.
"No sweetie, not tonight, I'm sorry," she said, padding over to sleep beside their father.
Scarlet began tossing and turning and then sat up. "Hey, are you guys still up?" she asked.
"Yes," they replied. She glanced curiously at Shawn. "Hey Shawn, what are you going to evolve into once you're old enough?"
"Huh?" He seemed caught off guard by the question. "Well it may sound a bit silly because I'm scared of the dark, but if I evolve into Umbreon I can easily overcome that fear."
Frederick couldn't help feeling surprised they all knew that Shawn was timid. "Heh, that's not a bad idea Shawn." Denny compliments.
"Thanks, Denny." Then he turns to look at Scarlet.
"How about you? Do you know what you want to be?"
She giggles. "I'm going to be a green shiny Espeon, then I'll be able to read your minds and I'll be the same colour as Mother."
Frederick found his tail wages with excitement. This was fun. They all turned to look at Denny and he just gave a smile. "Well, I think the answer will be clear as to what I'm going to be because I want to go live in the ice mountains when I'm older."
That completely took them all off guard.
"What? Why so far away?" Shawn asked and Denny just shrugged. "They just always interest me when I look at them, plus not too many Mons will be out there."
"I see so you like your privacy?" Frederick asked and he nodded. "Yup, so I'm going to become Glaceon." as happy as Frederick felt he couldn't stop his ears from drooping he was going to miss Denny if he really lived that far away.
Denny seemed to have caught his eye.
"You will come out to visit me won't you?"
He asked then Frederick smiled as an idea popped into his head. "I sure will, the cold won't bother me because I'm going to evolve into Flareon." They all looked happy.
"But you're not Choosing Flareon just to come visit me are you?" Denny asked.
"Of course not! I've been thinking of Flareon for some time. I think it would be cool to be a fire type."
"Well, I hope you plan to come out to visit me and Scarlet Denny because I don't know if I can bear the cold," Shawn said and Scarlet agreed with him.
"Ah don't worry guys we'll always make time for each other." Denny reassured them. Scarlet gapped her mouth open letting out a tired yawn.
"Hmm looks like someone is getting sleepy."
Shawn teased her and she had her head on him.
"Good night guys."
They all said good night to one another and went to sleep.
