Song of the Chapter: Dream Boy by Waterparks

Anna's POV

I had been doing homework for an hour when my phone rings.
"Hey Abs. What's up?"
"I've got a question."
"Yeah?"
"Do you have a crush on James?"
"Huh? What?"
"James. You seemed to smile at him a lot and I dunno I think you guys would be a cute couple."
"Is it that obvious?"
"That you like James? Yeah sort of why?"
"Because dad was literally saying the same thing after you all left."
"You do like him! Don't you!"
"Maybe."
"You should totally ask him out."
"No. No way."
"Why." She whines.
"Because I'm of scared of rejection."
"He won't reject you."
"How could you possibly know?"
"Because I, Abigail, know everything." She laughs.
"Do you just?"
"Yep!"
Someone knocks on my door. "Hold on!" I call out.
"Abs I have to go now talk to ya later."
"See ya A, and trust me."

"Come in!" I call out after hanging up the phone and mum opens the door.
"Hey, you know your dad didn't mean any harm earlier?" She says sitting on the end of my bed.
"I know. But I don't think he's wrong."
"Do you do have a crush on this boy?"
"Maybe a little." I say and hold my hand up, two fingers almost touching.
"Aww my little girl has a crush." She elbows me.
"Shh."
"He seems really sweet."
"Yeah."
"I think you should ask him out, I think he likes you too."
"No, no I'll pass. Abigail said the same thing."
"See, it's not just your parents that have noticed, your friends have too." I pull a face and she laughs.

"Yo!"
"Pete?!"
"Hey!"
"Stop shouting at me and come here!"
I hear him laugh and two pairs of footsteps walk upstairs.
"Does my little A have a crush?" I groan and face plant on my bed. Mum, dad and Pete laugh.
"Sorry kid."
"It's ok Pete. I think I can find it in my heart to forgive you." We all laugh and they leave me in my room. I finish off my homework and then I grab my guitar and play it quietly. I grab my notebook of songs and practise one I had recently written.

Maybe
You'll find a home
Maybe
You won't

Even if things
Don't work the way you planned
Please promise me
You'll stay alive

"That's awesome A, what song is that?" Pete says, leaning up against the door frame.
"Uh its a song I wrote."
"Really, that's so cool."
"Thanks. That's only the pre chorus and chorus. But it's not that good."
"No I really mean it. You have a talent in song writing."
"Thanks Pete."
"That meme was so many years ago!"
I laugh.
"No but I really appreciate that you like it."
"Anyway I just came to say goodbye. I think Brendon and I have finished our work for today."
"Okie, bye see ya later." I hug him.

"Anna! Dinner!" Dad calls out moments later.
"Ok!"
I walk downstairs and sit at the dining table.

"Hey I never asked, hows your music project going?" Mum asks.
"Oh yeah did you guys have fun?"
"Yeah. We have a few weeks or so to do it but yeah Layla is playing bass, Abigail is playing guitar, I'm singing and James is playing drums." Mum and dad smirk at each other at the mention of James.
"Shut up." I giggle and softly kick dad under the table.
"I'm sorry A."
"No it's ok plus I do like him."
"I knew it!" Dad shouts.

———

I walk down the schools hallway by myself with my head lowered. When I was with my friends, I was ok and confident but by myself, I was a target for Georgina and her group. It was Friday and I had two more blocks plus lunch until I could get home. Abigail kept trying to get me to talk to James and 'confess' but I didn't and I didn't plan on doing it.
"Where's your friends? Oh wait you don't have any." I hear laughter. I internally groan and look up to see Georgina.
"Hello to you too."
"You think your so amazing with your perfect life, your perfect parents. But I know that your adopted and your real parents hate you."
"News flash, everyone knows I'm adopted and I hate my real parents too so I don't know what your trying to prove."
"Anna something, you're a bitch."
"Something? My last name is Urie."
"No it's not and you know that. You will never be a Urie." She gets up really close in my face and spits the harsh words to me before backing away and walking off.
