Mood: In hell I'll be in good company - The death south
"Say hi to the monkey for me!"
"Monkey?"
"Hah... scientist... whatever!"
Home... finally home. The New Mexican wind blew through Jesse's hair as he sped between the canyons on the motorcycle he had 'borrowed' from Ashe. He hadn't seen her in many years, but she hadn't changed one bit. Some parts of him had hoped that she had grown up by now and chose a different path in life, but she was doing the exact same things as she was when they parted ways... and that life was not something Jesse wanted to be a part of anymore.
He had missed his old gang but it had not been a friendly encounter between them, so that was something to just put behind him and move on. All that mattered was that he had done what he had come here to do and now he was free. He had retrieved Echo, another hybrid that would be of great assistance to the new Overwatch crew and that was also an old friend of his. Winston had of course asked for Jesse to be part of the resurrected Overwatch as well, but Jesse had decided that it was his past and now he was going to build a new future for himself. They would just have to manage without him.
Eventually he would check up on Genji and the rest of his friends, but for now everything was so fresh and painful that he needed some time for himself... and what better place to do that than at his old home.
It was just a lucky coincidence that this was where Echo was being transported and therefore Jesse hadn't hesitated for a second to sign up for the mission to get her back online.
He was chuckling to himself as he held onto his hat while speeding down the familiar road that was Route 66. He had gotten to show off his gunslinger skills and Ashe's frustrated words as she had been taken out gave him great amusement. He did not kill her or the rest of the crew, he just secured them and sent them on their merry way, but he got the last cheeky laugh and that was all that mattered.
She had sworn to hunt him down and he could not say that he wasn't looking forward to it. This was the west and the way of fighting, a classic standoff in the hot sun with tumbleweeds and dirt flying all around, suited him perfectly. Jesse had loved every second of it.
A big grin ran across his rugged face as he took a drag of his cigar and looked up at the bright blue sky above him. Mountains, lakes and snow might be pretty, but the desert was his element and it gave him a sense of relaxation that he hadn't felt in a long time.
The bike came to a screeching halt right outside his favorite watering hole.
"Larry!" he shouted as he slammed the saloon doors open.
"Jesse McCree," the bartender said with surprise as the cowboy made his entrance. "If it wasn't for that serape of yours, I wouldn't have recognized you. You have gotten older!"
"Ha-ha!" Jesse chuckled. "Yeah... the years tend to do that to a man."
His boots hit the wooden floor as he confidently walked up to the bar and sat down.
If it was not for the modern vehicles outside, the bar could have been mistaken for any classic hangout from the old western movies back in the days with wooden furniture and all the typical interior.
Larry was a skinny, almost bald man in his sixties. His grey mustache and hunched-over posture bore witness that he had been around for a while.
"The usual?" Larry asked as he put down a glass he had just finished cleaning.
"You know it!" Jesse said with a wink and was presented with a bottle of whiskey. "Long time no see! How have you been?"
"Business as usual," Larry said and gestured out over the room and the crowd of people sitting around drinking, gambling and amusing themselves with the saloon girls. "You know, Jesse, this is the first time I actually get to serve you being of a legal age."
