This story is the continuation of Behind closed doors so if you haven't read that one I suggest to start there. This novel is more storydriven than BCD and also involves more focus on the other characters in the Overwatch family.
The story picks up...
A screech followed by a loud thump was heard as the last Talon soldier landed unconscious at Jesse's feet.
Jesse stretched and examined the damage done to his own body and then turned to Bob.
"Thanks, Bob," he said and gave the Omnic a fist bump.
Bob responded to Jesse's gesture a bit confused and then looked around at the piles of knocked out Talon soldiers around him. He then gently closed the door that the last one had tried to escape out through.
"Although you could have acted a bit faster... perhaps...," Jesse mumbled under his breath as he started to wipe the blood from the open cuts that covered his body.
A sad beeping sound came from Bob as he looked down at the ground. The huge Omnic then glanced in the direction of the saloon.
Jesse sighed and put a hand on Bob's arm.
"Don't worry," he said. "I won't tell Ashe."
Bob's eyes looked a bit calmer as he corrected his hat and nodded once at Jesse.
Jesse's night had been horrendous. Every single part of his body was aching from the torture the Talon soldier's had put him through.
Scattered around him were rusty tools covered in blood. He had been beaten and abused to the extent that he had been fairly sure that he would die.
Apparently Bob had come to the same conclusion and despite going against Ashe's orders, he had gotten Jesse out of the situation. With Bob's strength and size it had been over within a few seconds. Jesse was unsure if the soldiers were just knocked out or dead, but to be honest, he did not care.
He wanted to believe that there was something good in everyone, but after what his former colleagues had done to him... he was not so sure about it anymore.
He reached for a rag and cleaned himself up the best he could. He would need some stitches and would be bruised up for quite some time. He was running on adrenaline and anger, but was still surprised that he managed to keep himself standing up.
When the worst of the dirt and blood were gone, he grabbed his shirt and put it back on.
Jesse looked down at the man who had put out the cigar on his back. He reached inside the man's pocket and grabbed a cigar and a lighter.
"Don't tell Hanzo, okay?" he said to Bob with a light smile.
Bob nodded and Jesse could swear he saw a smile on his metallic face.
"I think I've earned it...," Jesse tiredly said before lighting the cigar.
He inhaled deeply and felt his entire body winding down.
"Damn... that's good," he sighed. "Not my brand... but right now anything would do."
