This story is the continuation of Behind closed doors so if you haven't read that one I suggest to start there. This novel is more storydriven than BCD and also involves more focus on the other characters in the Overwatch family.
The story picks up...
He knew that he was facing yet another sleepless night, but the hospital had ordered him to go home. He had spent every day and night by Jack's side, tirelessly waiting for him to wake up.
The doctors had assured Gabriel that Jack was going to survive, but despite that, he was still unconscious which made it impossible for Gabriel to relax.
The beeping from the heart rate monitor tortured Gabriel's mind and Genji's words were repeating in his head.
This could never happen again. Never ever happen again.
He loved Jack with his whole being and despite several days and nights twisting and turning every second of that horrible event in his mind, he still couldn't figure out how he could have lost control like that. If it wasn't for Genji, Jack would surely be dead now... and it would have been his own doing.
What was he going to do about it? Would this ever get better or would he eventually end up killing him?
He couldn't trust himself. Genji sure as hell did not and he had every right not to.
Gabriel's heart was beating erratically in his chest. Deep down he knew what he had to do, but his mind still tried to find a different solution, an escape. He didn't want to accept it.
His mind wandered off to Jesse and all the pain that he had caused him as well.
In reality, Gabriel had gone into denial and purely blamed the drugs for what he had done to him in Nepal and at the Overwatch headquarters, but now he was starting to doubt how much of it really were the drugs and how much of it had actually been his own doing. Was this who he truly was deep down?
The years he had spent with Talon had been simple. He got his treatment from Moira, had learned how to control many of the beneficial sides of his messed up body and the abilities that had come with it. He had turned off all of his emotions and performed the missions that Talon had ordered him to do.
Being an assassin had fit him perfectly. There never were any ethical issues to take into consideration, no repercussions or having to pretend to be some sort of hero. He got the mark that Talon wanted, went in and killed to his heart's content and left.
If it wasn't for him running into Jesse in Nepal and Ana forcing his thoughts into a different direction he would most likely still be doing the same things to this day.
On the other hand he would not have reunited with Jack and had these last few weeks together with him. But with the results he was facing now, had it all been worth it?
He was so close to having everything he had ever wanted... at least he had thought so.
He put his hands under the pillow and looked over at a chair across the room. He had handed Jack's blood covered clothes to the receptionist and she had made sure to have them cleaned. They were now neatly folded on top of the chair, with Jack's jacket hanging over the arm rest.
Gabriel closed his eyes. He desperately needed his sleep to be able to think straight but his mind wouldn't let him. What was supposed to be a simple 'clearing the air' with Jesse and allow both of them to move on had turned into a disaster... and he hadn't even found Jesse yet.
