No One's POV

Of course it's a front.

One that they made to not make the obvious more obvious. At least that's what they thought.

Well recently, their fights have started to become physical. Going to reach the physical level instead of just throwing empty words at the other, saying insults that they don't really mean.

Because of this very reason, their friends are becoming worried of what happened to their relationship.

"Futaba-chan." Mahiru approaches the shorter girl with her usual gentle aura and tone.

"Let me guess, this is about what happened earlier." When Futaba raises her head to face Mahiru, her big mouse ears had drooped down to the sides. "I'll take that reaction as a yes. Don't worry about it Mahiru, we'll be fine after school."

"Are you sure?" Mahiru continues to look at Futaba with worry in her eyes.

"Absolutely." Not taking this heavy and worried atmosphere, Futaba stands up and pats the back of Mahiru. She then shoots Mahiru a grin to thwart off her worries.

"Okay then."

Futaba thinks she's off the hook when Mahiru walks away. She took a deep breath and when she opened her eyes again, she's face to face with Mahiru again. This time with a look of doubt that made Futaba gulp. Mahiru continues to look straight into the shorter girl's eyes that made Futaba feel like she's being suspected of something she did in the past. She backs off on instinct.

"I'll tell Banana-chan if I see you fight with her again."

"W-what? What does Banana have to do with this?" Futaba is shocked at the statement as she tries to fight off Mahiru's cold stare.

"Just something." Mahiru trails off after finally letting Futaba by herself.

Futaba is left alone with her mouth hanging open. That was until she catches herself again and composes herself. She needs to think of what she was supposed to do before Mahiru approached her.

Okay. Think.

Right. They were supposed to meet out in the usual park. Futaba to be waiting on the other person there in the park. Until that fox comes, she's to indulge herself to her thoughts or simply be blank the entire time. The latter isn't even in her mind as she never thought of wasting time like that.

She should be thinking of something more productive, like... her sword practice. Even with her not blessed stature, she likes the practice as it makes her feel stronger. It makes her feel that she protect the most important person in her life. That put a smile on her face.

"Futaba-han~!"

An oh-so-familiar tone gets in her ears, making her swoon. She tries her best not to make it show on her face, but she can't stop the silly grin from taking its place.

"Kaoruko!" She stands up from the bench and with a loud voice, calls the name of the fox. The smile already on her face widens when she sees the very same one on the other girl.

Kaoruko greets the mouse with a hug, snuggling in close, even as close as a nuzzle to Futaba's left cheek. The contact made them burst into a cheery laughter.

"You were later than usual. Did someone talk to you too?"

"Too? Does that mean it also happened to you?"

They look at each other and widened their eyes at the same time. Communicating with just their eyes, they both nodded at each other.

"Mahiru/Maya!" They said at the same time.

"I guess our covers blown." Futaba reaches for the back of her head and scratches it. The unsatisfaction clear in her tone.

"We don't have to hide anymore if they already found out. That way I can be free to do as I please!" Kaoruko says with a sweet grin on her face as she pounces on Futaba's back.

"Wait-" To Kaoruko's disappointment, Futaba denied the advance and in result, the mouse receives the famous pout of the sly fox that Kaoruko is. Futaba didn't see it.

"Are you sure about that? You were the one who pushed the idea of covering it up." Futaba takes a cautious glance at Kaoruko and finally saw the face her lover was making. She scratches her cheek this time as cold sweat falls down her temple.

"Of course! I don't want to make those painful words at you anymore... It pains me more than you think." Kaoruko says the last part to herself in a whisper. It seems like the mouse didn't catch even a syllable of the statement.

"Even I don't want to say those words. Though they were just empty words that hold nothing to it. There's no way I can hurt you in any way." Futaba takes the hands she denied at first, intertwining their fingers together.

At this point both had a sheen of water over their eyes and comforted each other with a much needed embrace full of warmth.

"Let's be open with our relationship and follow their advice. I'm sure Tendou also said the same thing." Futaba only hears silence for an answer.

She pulls the fox closer and hears the calm breathing of Kaoruko. It seems like the fox was warm enough to have fallen asleep. Futaba giggled to herself.

She guesses that Kaoruko did probably work herself out too much during class. A fond smile on her face, Futaba shifts herself so she can carry Kaoruko on her back.

"If you were this tired, you should've given me a heads up first." Futaba sighs and walks to where they were staying.

Another step into the future with one another.
