Claudine's POV
It may have been just a normal school day if it weren't for her acting all weird and out of character. This is Tendou Maya we're talking about! She doesn't do those nods with an excited smile! She doesn't give those needy side eyes! But somehow, it has to do with the date today.
Yep, it's July 24, her birthday...
With her being all expectant, I can't let her know I haven't got a present yet. That's a major problem for me. I can't go out yet or even try cooking something without my own ingredients. Of course I can't use the ingredients already there because that's for Banana to use. It seems like I need to persevere through the day and from her shy glances.
"Hey, Claudine." She made a sound of slamming her hand on my desk. This is new, fufu. I could get used to this. I looked up to see her do a small pout. "Why is that you haven't talked to me all day?"
"Sorry about that, it wasn't intended or anything along those lines. But I'll be off before you, so see you back in the dorms." I hastily put all my things into my bag and left the about to be empty classroom. It may have been rude of me to like storm off like that. Now I'm regretting it.
I looked back once and saw her face Banana and Junna who gave her a shrug.
That pained look on her face seems to have a big effect on me. I slapped myself on both cheeks to get me back on track. That hurt... Why did I do that? Nevermind that! So what should we get for Tendou Maya? Good thing I already asked for permission to go out beforehand.
I have arrived to an accessory shop which I was looking in their display for quite a while. It only brought me the urge to buy myself some new earrings so, I went out of the shop a bit depressed.
Since this was Maya we are talking about, hmmm... What should I get her is the problem, huh? I should've thought this out thoroughly! I ruffled my own hair.
Ah! That's it! I should've thought of this earlier and I would be back in the dorms for now. I'm an idiot! Argh!
I really took my time there... Sunset have almost passed by me, but that's fine, I'm already on my way back.
I raised the box in my hand up to the sky. A warm smile took over my lips. I wonder if she'll like it?
With a present in hand, I sneakily looked through the windows before I made my way to the entrance. I peeked on the window of the common room, Futaba and Kaoruko were splattered on the sofa. Maya entered the room and seemed to have a question but was stopped before she could. Banana, who smiled at me, was calling both Futaba and Kaoruko to the kitchen who groggily complied.
With that as cue, I took my time going in the dorms. With the click of the door, I entered. Her gaze straying to look to my direction.
"Ma Claudine..." There it is again, the hint of sadness in her eyes. I know that you're down because no one has yet to greet her today. I guess that's the childish aspect of her.
"Tendou Maya, I'm back." I replied paying no mind to the sad tone she was using. I tapped my shoe on the ground before replacing them with comfy slippers. "What's that look for?" Seems like I can't control myself in teasing her.
But that all backfires when I saw tears running down her cheeks, which greatly shocked me. Without another word, she ran to me and hugged me tight. It would be a problem if I was keeping my present for her behind my back so I raised both of my hands up.
At that timing, Banana's head was hovering over the entrance to her kitchen and asked for a signal to proceed. Kaoruko on the hand was giving her a sly grin which was broken by Futaba, who gave her a smack. I hesitantly nodded, really embarrassed by the sheer force the woman has put on me.
"Happy Birthday, Tendou Maya." I broke the hug after my hands were free of the present. At that her tears had stopped for a short while. I ran my hands through her hair. "That's not like you to cry like that, Maya. Turn around."
She followed and was greeted with the rest of the people in the dorm. Banana at the center with my requested baumkuhen cake.
"Happy Birthday, Maya/-chan/Tendou/-san!" Of course, this was my plan after all. It's just the present itself was not planned... And a second round of her tears streamed down her cheeks.
"I can't believe you ignored me the whole day for this." She tried to wipe her streaming tears away. "It was a big success for the surprise."
"Let's eat first, I'll talk more with you later." I put a hand on her shoulder. "It'd be a waste not to eat Nana's feast, ain't that right Banana?"
"Bananice! Let's have dinner everyone!" Banana beamed and speedily put her dishes on the table. Junna helping her put utensils in place. Karen was restless and Mahiru tried her best to stop her from eating ahead. Hikari was just in a daze. Kaoruko had her hands together in delight of the food before her, Futaba almost did the same.
Dinner was a blast. It was really fun with everyone together. They also gave Maya their presents for her. Now all that's left is mine to give, except I already did.
"Saijou-san?" Junna cocked her head to the side, confused at me for not moving an inch on my seat. Maya also trailed her eyes to lock with mine. I scratched my head in defeat, I just need to do something, okay, okay. I'll do it fine!
"I'll take her with me. I'll leave the things here to you guys, sorry for the trouble." I took Maya by the arm and made her stand up. I scratched my cheek. "And thanks..."
"No problem!" Banana beamed at me, making her way back into the kitchen. Kaoruko flashed me a teasing grin which I completely brushed away and continued ddragging Maya out of their sights and into my room. I let her sit on my bed and I dragged my chair to face her.
"So..." Maya stretched her hand toward me, palms facing me. Asking for something I already gave her. I pointed to her hair, which she hesitantly hovered her hands on top of her head. Then her face beamed of happiness.
I can't believe this woman, how did she not notice me tying her hair?!
"How did you know I needed another ribbon?"
"You were so obvious. You were not wearing them for a few days and figured it was battered." I huffed as I looked away from her excited look, like there were stars in her eyes.
"Ma Claudine! Come here." She stretched out both of her hands, welcoming me for a hug, which I gladly complied. How can I not when the opportunity presented itself?
This time she was the one playing with my hair, that was until she pulled me together with her falling on the comfort of the fluffy bed. I guess I don't particularly hate this part of her.
"Thank you, Ma Claudine." She rested her head on my chest and murmured, "I love you." before succumbing to sleep.
"Mechante va..." I smiled to myself before letting my hand rest on her head.
