No One's POV
They've softened up a lot for the past year. More like warmed up to each other with the amount of time they spend together. Though they still get into fights occasionally. Only that they reconcile much faster and admit to their faults which surprised the people around them.
The snickering Kaoruko with her slow waving tail were giving bad vibes to her fellow foxes. Because they are also the esteemed foxes, they did their best to act indifferent or just outright ignore the ways of the peculiar fox.
"Kaoruko! I've come to get you!" Futaba with a helmet under her arm and another in her hand, called out to the fox the same as usual. The way Kaoruko responded was the one that was different.
She filed out at an incredible speed then took her helmet from Futaba's hand. She also doesn't ever forget to wave to the other foxes along with a teasing grin.
Futaba bringing with her the helmets was also one of the key things they noticed. The mouse brings the helmets very rarely. Which means that today was one very special day.
"It seems like she'll be having fun today." Shizuha flicked her ear once she understood the actions Kaoruko was doing throughout the whole day.
"Aren't you too high tension today?" Futaba followed after the humming girl. The two were walking at a steady but quick pace.
"It can't be helped. We're going to another sweets shop today plus ride your hard-earned bike. How could I not look forward to this day so much?" She turned on her heel while holding the safety lock of the helmet with both of her hands.
"We're only going just because it is your birthday. But if you're that expectant about it, I would want to fulfill your wishes." The mouse renewed her hold on her own helmet as she reached for the keys in her pocket. When she glanced up to the fox making a wider smile, she unintentionally let out a groan.
"It doesn't mean everything everything okay. Stop it with that smile, your giving me shivers." After locking her helmet on, Futaba forcibly put the helmet on Kaoruko resulting in a pained cry.
"That's a downer." Kaoruko hummed with a pout then rested her whole front onto the mouse's back as soon as Futaba sat down.
"Unlike you, my pockets have their limits." Sighing, Futaba turned on the engine and put a hand over Kaoruko's on her stomach before driving out onto the road.
"Geh. Why are we in front of your house?" Kaoruko stood baffled by the motorcycle.
"Forgot something." She simply replied then went inside while calling for her mother.
"What could she be forgetting about? It is our precious date today and she's fumbling like this." Kaoruko grumbled while tapping her feet waiting for the mouse. She listened intently to her footsteps the moment they were nearing the front door.
"Sorry. It was something important." The mouse returned with a new air of seriousness around her. "Let's go."
"Futaba-"
"I know, mom!"
It was only a glance that the fox took to have seen her partner's mother. Then she felt the tenseness of Futaba to which she addressed with a tightening grip of her hold on Futaba's waist.
Fidgety on her feet, Kaoruko didn't dare to break the silence. If it were her usual circumstances, she would've went and cut the tingling air already with her witty comment. But she didn't want to worry Futaba so she acted the same as always when the awaited plates of sweets arrived.
Futaba chuckled, getting Kaoruko's attention away from the sweets.
"You're amazing Kaoruko. Even when I'm feeling all the jitters right now. I feel ridiculous for caring." Futaba folded herself to the chair, stifling her laughter. The fox froze on her spot just before the fork met the dessert.
"Sorry Kaoruko. It's just something my mother said about this one." She put a beautifully designed box on the table. It looked like it could be a set with the sweets surrounding it.
"What's this?" Kaoruko put down the fork and brought the box closer to her.
"My present. I'd like you to have that." Having her usual spunk on, Futaba let her open the box.
Inside was a silver necklace.
"It's not much yet but I used to wear that one. I promise I'll get you something better in the future."
"This is just fine, Futaba. In fact, it's better." Kaoruko's eyes softened. She closed the box again and let it stay on the table. She picked up her fork and took a bite of the cake first. Delighting at the flavors with an exaggerated hum, she wagged her tail. "I am not refusing the idea of getting something better in the future but for now... Let's eat first. It would be a waste to not eat them in their best condition."
"That's true. Then without holding back." Futaba giggled and she finally took her fork and picked her dessert.
A mouse and a sweet delicacy. It comes in a set sometimes, right? Well, the fox may have found it funny but that's because it's her mouse who has such a sweet tooth. Futaba made her statement clear the last time they went out of their way for sweets. Pressing it more, it was her idea. Kaoruko was just pulled along for the ride.
So this little trip might just be as precious for the mouse the same as the fox.
"Thank you." Kaoruko suddenly said and Futaba immediately smiled.
