Rui's POV
Out in the town, rubbing my hands together for warmth, I rest my back on the concrete wall. Looking up at the starry sky, I kept myself off of thinking of the cold getting to me.
"Sorry to keep you waiting out in this cold, Rui-chan." Just by hearing her voice is enough to make myself warm. I stood up straight and faced the person who called me, a bright smile on my face.
"Don't mind it, Tamao. I'll wait for you anytime." The way a subtle blush was forming on her face made myself proud.
"Really?" She wrapped an arm around mine, giving me additional warmth as well as the other way around.
"Yes, really."
I really can't believe it yet. That this kind of thing is also happening for me. It feels unreal. I've always just thought that it was only going to happen in my imagination. But that changed when I got the answer to my question. And it was the reciprocation of my feelings. It was the best.
"Come on Rui-chan! You've been up in the clouds this whole time. Didn't you hear what I just said?" She called out. I lost myself there with just her voice. We already arrived at our apartment, noting the small pout she was making.
"Sorry, Tamao. This all still feels like a dream." I nudged her cheek with my hand, which she pulls and makes my hand cup her cheek. She leans into it and put her own hand over mine. Now I'm the one getting embarrassed.
"You definitely feel me right? I'm not a dream. We're not in a dream." She showed me the smile that just brings butterflies into my stomach, it was breathtaking. I nodded and pushed open the door.
"What were you doing?" I asked as I took the jacket she was wearing. She raised an eyebrow at the vagueness of the question.
"You mean before we walked back home?" I nodded and she showed me a teasing smile in return. "Look forward to it later~" She left me with her jacket after she took off her own shoes and skipped into the kitchen.
I scoffed at her playfulness and took off my own jacket and shoes before following her in, bringing the jackets folded on my arm.
I turn my head to the kitchen's direction. A fond smile found its place on my face when I saw the familiar silhouette of her doing repeating motions for cooking. She's the better cook between us, I can still cook though.
"Can't you just tell me?" I walked up behind her and wrapped my arms on her waist.
"No. What's with you today, Rui-chan?" She focused on what she was doing, seemingly ignoring my actions.
"It's fine isn't it?" I nuzzled into her neck, trying to get her attention. Even her smell gets me to calm down, but that isn't what I need to focus on at the moment.
"We can't have dinner at this rate." She finally raised a hand and patted my head. It worked and I purred into the touch.
"I'll let go if you tell me."
"I'm giving it to you later. That enough?" She turned around and reciprocated the hug.
"I'll have to make do with it then." I took my hands with me and walked backwards with a defeated smile.
"Thank you. Just wait for a little bit." She waved as I left the kitchen.
She didn't need to wave me off. I was just going to the living room and watch her dance in the kitchen. I hummed my way back to the living room, sat on the comfortable couch, and looked to her direction. I didn't need to distract myself with other things when what distracts me the most is just right there.
Every so often she looks this way with an amused smile, sometimes a giggle escapes. And everytime she does that, my heart skips a beat, everytime.
Seeing that she's patting on her apron, that means she's about to be done. I stood up and moved to the dinning table. Getting it ready for a meal. Not a speck of dust on it, placing the plates we chose together today along with the utensils.
It's Christmas today after all.
Ah right, Christmas. I haven't gotten it ready yet. I have to put it in me right now while I still have the time. I'm sure she's got me something too by the way she was teasing me earlier. I'll be happy with whatever she'll give me, but a better gift would be her being happy about receiving what I'll give her.
"I've kept you waiting didn't I? Sorry about that." Tamao looked to my direction while she's already sat by the dinning table.
"No, I did." I sat across her and immediately put a box, purple with a dark shade of green as the ribbon, in front of her. She did the same when she noticed I moved my arm, just with the colors switched between the ribbon and the box.
"You've been wanting to see it quickly."
"I wanted you to see it as soon as possible."
We laughed at the similarity of what we had just said. She caught her breath first, me not a second later than her.
"Go on." She gestured for me to open it first.
"Then, let's open it together." I pushed my gift towards her as I picked mine up. It was the same size as to what I was giving. It started to give me shivers at the thought we chose the same gift.
"Okay." She picked the gift meant for her.
"On... 3... 2... 1!" We both pulled on the string at the same time and took the lid off the box.
When I saw its contents, my jaw had left itself open. It was a familiar bird necklace. A turtle dove. The exact same one I chose for her. I looked up to see her expression. She was giggling to herself, then she looked to my direction too.
We chose the exact same accessory. How funny fate is.
"When did you buy this Rui-chan?" She couldn't help but ask. She did just buy hers earlier.
"A few days back when I got off from work. Probably the same place where you bought this." I raised the accessory and moved my hands to the back of my neck, immediately wearing it. Flashing a reserved smile to the girl across me.
"Do you know what these turtle doves mean then?"
"Huh?"
"I assume you don't then." She chuckled. "It's loving kindness. It's a partnership, a covenant. It's my proof of my feelings for you."
"Wha-!" That made me flare up. There was a meaning like that. I just simply thought that it would suit her. Something to remember her by without needing to open my phone.
"Merry Christmas."
I might've fainted then and there with her dazzling smile.

That was Shun-chan!
Hope you guys are all well!
This might've been rushed, but it's not 'that' rushed (at least in my opinion).
As always,
Thanks for dropping by!
