No One's POV
"Yukko." Stern and firm.
The black bird on the window turns its head to the black haired beauty.
"Why are you always in that form? You can just take another comfortable nap on the bed." The black haired stomps her feet towards where the black bird was, scooping her up into her hands. She later throws it into the air after looking at the bird's eyes.
"Why do you always throw me into the air? You should've just gently put me on the couch Rui." A line of smoke appears for a moment and it dissipates a second later, revealing the human form of the bird who was scratching the back of her neck.
"That was my best option. Now answer mine." Rui pushes a hand to Yuyuko's chest.
"It's comfortable. Plus I can fly. Satisfied?" A grin spreads on Yuyuko's face when she sees the other girl wrinkle her brows together.
"Ah, whatever." She turns her back on the bird woman. The mark on the back of her neck shining in Yuyuko's eyes, it reverberated, it hurt. Her eyes turning into the red hue that hurts her. Thankfully Rui has her back on her, she didn't need to see this in Yuyuko's opinion.
"I'll go to work now. See you in the evening." Rui waved a hand before the door closed, making Yuyuko take a deep breath.
She blinked her eyes open, her hands now back on her side from clutching her head. She still doesn't know why Rui's mark has that effect on her. It was a simple small circle, white on one side and black on the other. She ran to the bathroom to confirm her eye's back to the normal hue it had.
It doesn't matter. The pain. It subsides anyway. She brushes off the beating pain in her eyes. She takes another deep breath and transforms back into a bird.
Her control not completely back, her flight was not that smooth. She dropped on the couch when trying to leave through the window as per usual. She grits her teeth for succumbing to the pain for that moment. She still had to watch over that girl. A mission she gives herself whenever Rui leaves the house.
Getting a bit relaxed now that the pain is bearable, she tries again. Flies out to the window. She feels relieved when she sees familiar black hair walking in a slow pace on the street below.
This was routine. She flies after the black haired, on the context that she will protect her if there are any anomaly.
This thought has been rooted in her ever since Rui picked her up. It was when flowers were in full bloom. A kid had thrown a rock at her, resulting in her fall. Hours later, Yuyuko was still holding out and that was when Rui had stumbled upon her.
Her small body ached as if it was reacting on something. Then she passed out.
She woke up again in the home of Rui. She had already braced herself for a sudden recoil of some sort but that didn't happen. Rui was not by her side then, the girl was in the kitchen. She nods to herself, so there was a certain distance.
She flies, meters away from the human. Her eyes widen when she saw the mark on the back of her neck. She realized it then. Rui must be the maiden that was supposed to find them at some point. A group of black birds in the depths of the forest. The myth that was being told in the village before Yuyuko went out on her own. Her father kept on telling her about it, like a broken radio.
Nevermind that. She has to focus on Rui being safe above all else. Her own safety is not a priority.
"*squeak*" Yuyuko turns her head upwards to know the cause of the hit. It was just snow that was sliding of the roof. When she looks back down, the girl she was supposed to be keeping an eye had disappeared. She becomes flustered, she flies in circles before deciding to turn the corner.
The scene presented before her was what she dreaded. Two men dressed in black, one holding Rui, the other with a knife. Rui tries her best at resisting, her eyes were telling her that. They turn her on her back, slapping her hair away.
As Yuyuko thought, it was the mark they were after.
She swiftly flies down slowly, not to startle the two men in black. She softly lands on the head of the person holding Rui. The guy got flustered for a moment, while the other waves a hand towards her signalling her to go away.
Rui looks up in confusion. By the look of her eyes, she definitely recognizes the bird. Yuyuko took that as a permission and transformed. The smoke startling the two guys.
Rui takes this as oppurtunity and kicks the guy with the knife first on his knees. That got him to get down on the ground. She throws another kick at the other guy, it was a kick to the side of the head. He becomes unconscious then. The guy with the knife lifts it up, menacingly. It didn't bother Rui anymore. With a dark shadow lining her eyes, she looks at the guy like he was trash and kicks the knife away. She was about to hit the last kick to his head, she returned to her senses when a hand reaches on her shoulder.
"That's enough Rui. You're going to kill him." Yuyuko stops her at just the right time. "You're going to get late at this rate. You should go ahead now. I'll take care of this."
"Sorry Yukko. I got out of control there." Rui retracts her leg and relaxes. The guy had already long passed out. "I'll get going then."
Yuyuko lets out a relieved sigh when Rui didn't notice that her eyes had become red again and had started to walk out of the alleyway.
She turns around to see the unconscious men on the ground.
"They should stop sending their guys anymore. They know they can't touch even a dot in her mark. Why are they even still after Rui?" Yuyuko talks to no one in particular, but the person behind these surprise attacks.
She was about to slouch down and poke the cheeks of the unconscious guys when she was forcefully turned around. Her eyes widen in surprise when she felt soft lips on her own.
"Thank you for always coming at the right time, Yuyuko." Yuyuko was blinded, by the sheer brightness of the girl's smile. She was fainting.
'Why'd you have to go and do that, Rui!? That was bad for both my heart and body!' She curses as she felt her consciousness fade away. 'Rather, this recoil! This is a curse. I can't even make a move on her because of this...'
Her consciousness finally fades away and her body gives out. Leaving a flustered Rui holding the fainted body of Yuyuko.
Thankfully Yuyuko unconsciously turns into a bird, making Rui's work that much easier to return back home.
That day, Rui was scolded for being late to work.
