≫ ──── ≪•◦ ❈ ◦•≫ ──── ≪"I found this book the other day," Hanji said, placing a thick-paged book on their desk. They opened the book and started flicking through the pages, stopping once they found the page they were looking for. "Unfortunately, it's written in another language, so I don't know what it says. But the merchant who sold it to me said it's about ancient gods. Well, ancient gods and devils."
Ancient gods and devils. From what Violet knew, this was not going to be the good news that she was expecting. When Hanji had called her to their office to tell her about new information they had found about her symbol, she had expected a solid answer she has been waiting for for a long time now. She hadn't expected that this weird symbol and her powers would result in being such a pain to find information about. It was wishful thinking on her part, thinking that the answer would be so easy to find, because if that was the case then her abilities would be common knowledge everywhere she turned to hear.
"I don't like this Hanji. You know how fucking messy the whole thing about gods and devils is." The business of the gods, and devils too, was indeed a tricky subject. Gods and devils were ambitious creatures, willing to do any sort of deal with mere mortals to only end up benefiting from the deal themselves instead of the human. They were nasty, never sticking to their word. And anything that had to do with them was a lost cause from the start. It never ended well. It had been ages, though, since mortals had contact with either of the two. Centuries, even. Which resulted in things related to them being even more tricky than it already was, as the knowledge about them was lost through the generations. While people still worshipped their gods and feared the devils, they only knew about praying to them and each respective gods and devils powers. Nothing else. "You should know this is pretty much a lost cause--"
"I know, I know, Violet. But listen," They pointed to the book, showing her a page full of symbols. "These are ancient symbols, from both devils and gods.""Do you even know which are who's to start with, shitty-glasses?" Levi asked.
They bashfully rubbed the back of their neck, offering Violet and Levi an awkward side-grin. "Well...that's the thing. I still don't know which side belongs to devils and which to the gods." They said, "But see here! This is Violet's symbol."
She moved to take a closer look at the book, eyes wide with cautious excitement at hearing those words leaving Hanji's lips. Her symbol was in the book, which was a major advancement in this whole time looking for answers. And indeed it was there, the exact thing she saw every time she summoned the blue-ish light to her forehead and her powers to ignite. A flush of relief flowed through her body, her shoulders loosening the tiniest bit as she felt a part of her calm, knowing that they were getting closer to knowing what her powers were all about. But it was a momentary feeling, as now a new question arose; did her symbol belonged to a god or a devil? And she did not know if either would be a better answer than the other.
Levi scoffed. "This doesn't clarify anything, Hanji. We still don't know shit about anything."
"Yes it does, Levi. Have some faith! This means that Violet's power either originate from some god or--"
"A devil." She said, looking at Levi with a concerned frown on her face. His eyes met hers, but those grey orbs didn't reveal what he was thinking. She wanted to see a glimpse of concern in those eyes, to reassure herself that she wasn't the only one concerned about this news. She wanted, so desperately, a bit of comfort. But she did not receive either. She sighed, her eyes leaving Levi's and went to Hanji's. "Thank you, Hanji. I appreciate this, as confusing as it is."
"I know it doesn't answer the whole question, and, if anything, it might cause more concerning thoughts. But this is something major, Violet. A step closer to the answer." They said, "I will try to look more into it, find someone who knows this language. I will find an answer."
She offered them a small smile. "Yes, thank you. I know you will, but don't overwork yourself. It's not that necessary at the moment."Hanji returned the smile and grabbed the book off their desk, placing it back on the bookshelf they had it in. Violet and Levi turned to look at each other and nodded their heads, a silent agreement to take their leave. But as soon as they started making their way to the door, Hanji's voice ranged. "Hold it there, you two!"
They both only stopped on their tracks but didn't bother turning around. They thought this would be one of Hanji's attempts into getting them to watch or listen to one of their experiments, so they did not want to get involved in that at all costs. "What do you want?" It was Levi who asked.
They laughed. "Why are you so pissed, shorty? Got into a fight with Violet over here?"
He turned around, glaring at them with cold eyes. "What are you trying to insinuate, titan-freak?"
"So I am right! You and Violet are a thing!"
Violet almost choked on air, Hanji's accusation catching her off guard. She turned around, a bewildered look in her eyes. "Where did you even get such a thing, Hanji?"
"C'mon, the frequent visits to each other's office's, the fact that you stay there long hours."
"Gods, Hanji, we are only friends." She said, "Being at each other's office doesn't insinuate that there something going on between us. We are working, nothing more." She looked at Levi and he nodded at her, agreeing with what she just said."I don't buy it, Levi wouldn't allow anyone inside his office for that amount of time you spend in there, Violet."
"I don't allow you in there." He said, "You would make a mess."
Violet sighed. "Look, Hanji. We are friends, that's it. Don't make this shit weird, and stop counting for how long we are at each other's offices, that's not normal."
"In other words, you're insane." Levi said and turned to leave Hanji's office, the man beyond words done with having to do anything in their room. They were friends, had just become such a thing a day ago. Well, more like their friendship was confirmed a day ago, but it didn't change the fact that they were just friends. He didn't want a relationship, didn't need it. This world did not allow such a thing to bloom, did not allow love to blossom. Especially not in the field he worked in, when he could be gone at any moment; or the person he devoted his heart to could be taken away from his grasp, and he would not be able to do anything about it. He had lost a great deal already, lost people he loved. He would not allow himself to love again, would not lose again. He was tired of losing and he knew, knew so well, that if he lost the one person that owned his heart, it would destroy him to a point that he will not be able to come back from. But sometimes, when he looked into those E/C eyes, he allowed himself to wonder what being loved would be like.
