News broke out about the true identity of the Titans.
Through all sorts of means possible -- newspaper, information boards, small audiences, etc -- it was revealed to the citizens inside the walls who the threat of the titans was. That the very threat to mankind, that those who brought them pain and suffering were just like them: human.
That those beasts that claimed lives, that took all that mattered at some point, were humans who had been turned into that. Into a Titan.
And to add more to the wound, it was also revealed that they, titans, have the same ancestry just like humans. They were all something known as Subjects of Ymir. The King, around 100 years ago, erected these very walls. He was responsible for the creation of the very thing that kept us safe until a few years ago. He did something good, created something good.
But he also altered our memories using the very thing that helped him build these walls. He altered memories, people's minds, this significant part of the human, with titan powers and made them all believe that humanity outside the walls was wiped out. That it was just them that remained.
But the truth, the honest truth, was that humanity hadn't perished. That, just like Hanji had said, there was something greater other than the people in Paradis Island waiting out there. Watching.

The young man with glasses spoke again. "When speaking of Subjects of Ymir, they call us this: a Race of Devils." He had gathered the three powers of the Survey Corps --- Hanji, Levi and Violet --- in a room, sitting at a round table. His partner, an old man, offered them all tea, to ease their nerves or something like that, Violet thought. They started sharing with them the long history of Paradis Island, the truth that had been hidden from them for many years to count.
The young man with glasses stopped, swallowing a lump down his throat, before he added, "In the near future, the enemy will invade our lands to obtain resources. Their plan began five years ago, with the attack of the Colossal Titan."
How he knew this truly beats Violet's mind. But she didn't question it, not when it aligned pretty well with everything they had just been through this whole time. It was hard to wrap her mind around it, just like everything that had happened, but she believed it.
Hanji looked down at the table. "I don't want to believe it, either, but it's true." They voiced her thoughts. "All of this is true." They sighed. "But, how are people reacting to the news?"
This time, it was the older man to answer. "Some accept it. Some laugh it off. Some lash out at the Military and insist that it's a conspiracy theory." He shrugged. "As all of you feared, it's become chaotic."
Violet resisted the urge to roll her eyes. "Yeah, but there's no helping that. The reports are what put food in our mouths. The taxpayers decide what to make of it."
"That's one thing we're doing better than the old King." Hanji agreed.
The chatting resumed, but Violet couldn't help but think about Ymir.
Ymir. If memory doesn't fail her, she had read something about her in one of those many books that she had bought to learn more about her powers; that now took up most of the space in the bookshelf in her office. But she had skipped her part, had not cared enough to learn about her or read it because it didn't seem that she would have anything to do with her. And she still thought the same. But if this Ymir had something to do with them all, with her, well gods be damned she would read it.
She got up from the table. "I don't mean to interrupt, but we have to be going somewhere now. Thank you for your time and hospitality." Her eyes met with Levi's and he nodded, getting up after Hanji. She watched as Hanji walked out the door when Levi took a hold of her hand, intertwining their hands, and guided her out of the room. His touch surprised her if she was going to be honest. Like always, he was never one to hold her hand in a place where people's keen eyes could catch their public display of affection. But maybe something in him was changing, maybe he now felt comfortable enough to do it. Whatever it was, Violet was not complaining. She actually...she actually liked it.
"Let's hope the brats haven't got into any trouble."
She hummed her agreement. "Yeah, me too."
