Daniel smiled, as a cool cloth touched his face.
"Freddy...." Daniel whispered.
"Shh....you need to save your strength." Georgia whispered, ignoring the whimpers and crying from the soldiers around him in the medical tent. Daniel opened his eyes, and Georgia was taken aback by his dark eyes.
"Is it bad?" Daniel asked and Georgia bit his lip, not daring to look down at the bloody spot where the blanket rested on the wound on his leg.
"I...it's fixable." Georgia said with a smile. Daniel smiled again and tried to sit up, but hissed in pain falling back on bed.
"You need to be careful, the doctor is going to stitch you up." Georgia ordered.
"W-Why....why are you helping me?" Daniel asked as Georgia put the cloth back on his head. "I...I was awful to you..."
"Same reason you kept writing to me, we're both stubborn assholes." Georgia laughed. In reality the former colony didn't know why he was so enamoured by the man; he thought after breaking the plate over his head at the dance it'd be the end of it but he couldn't get the cocky soldier off his mind. He sought him out whenever troops came home, which led to them exchanging letters when Daniel was away. Georgia would swear to the other thirteen he did not care for the man, but he would be lying if his breath didn't catch everytime news came from the front, especially about casualties.
Daniel smiled as his breath hitched, the pain from his wound becoming unbearable. Georgia swallowed hard.
"I-If I just listened....I wouldn't have gotten stabbed." Daniel moaned.
"You saved other soldiers lives, Daniel, just think of--"
"Kentucky." Georgia tilted his head.
"Wha?"
"I.....fuck....Virginia won't listen but I want to be a state...." Georgia's heart stopped.
"You.....you know Virginia?" Georgia whispered.
"I'm his cousin." Dan-Kentucky whispered, looking at Georgia, the pain subsiding. "I....I shouldn't be telling a human this, but....that's why I've only been injured...not hurt."
Kentucky was a state.
Well he was almost a state.
But he was a state.
"Kentucky." Georgia began grabbing the cloth again and putting it on his head. "I'm a state too." Kentucky shot up in bed, before the southern man forced him back down.
"W-What?"
"Freddy's my real name....but I'm Georgia." Georgia announced. Kentucky looked at Georgia in shock before snickering.
"I would be in love with a state." Kentucky muttered. Georgia's face flushed but before he could respond, a doctor and two attendants appeared.
"Mr. Wright, I'm here to fix up your leg." The doctor announced. The two attendants began preparing the soldier for surgery and Georgia got up to leave before feeling a tug on his arm.
"No...please don't leave." Kentucky begged tears in his eyes. Georgia looked fearfully at the doctors and attendants before holding his hand.
"I'll stay as long as I can." Georgia whispered. Kentucky smiled and hissed in pain as an attendant moved his leg. Georgia grabbed the wet cloth and cooled Kentucky's brow as the doctor began, keeping a firm hold on his hand.
"I'm in love with you too." Georgia thought, wishing he could say it back to the suffering state, but knowing it would be better to confess after his leg was fixed.
Kentucky passed out after a while, the pain too much, and Georgia had to leave for a meeting with the thirteen. The entire time he sat, listening to New York and Massachusetts yell at each other, thinking about the soldier in the bed, wanting to question Virginia about him, wishing he was there giving him comfort right now. He quickly ran out of the meeting as soon as it ended back to the field hospital, looking for news about Kentucky. The field hospital was quiet when Georgia entered, looking down the rows of beds and sleeping soldiers on the ground before his eyes fell on Kentucky, still passed out. Georgia quickened his pace and made it to Kentucky's bedside.
"Kentucky?" Georgia whispeed. Kentucky's eyes opened slightly and he smiled.
"Geo." Kentucky whispered.
"How are you feeling?" Georgia asked, touching Kentucky's hair.
"Much better that you're here." Kentucky crocked. Georgia smiled and looked back at the fresh blanket over the possibly states body.
"How was it?"
"Well...I won't be riding my horses for the next few weeks, but it's better." Kentucky explained reaching out for Georgia's hand. Georgia took the young man's hand, entwining his fingers with his, smiling down at him.
"I'm glad, we can't lose you yet, until you become a state." Georgia teased making Kentucky chuckle. Georgia didn't know what came over him, but he leaned down and kissed Kentucky, who kissed him back with as much strength as he could spare. The two kissed for a second before breaking apart, panting.
"I kissed a state." Kentucky said with a smile.
"You probably say that to everyone you kiss." Georgia teased.
"None of 'em are like you." Kentucky smirked before the two leaned in and kissed again. The kiss lasted a bit longer before Kentucky broke the kiss, laying back in bed.
"Stay?" Kentucky asked tiredly. Georgia took his hand and pressed it against his cheek.
"I'm not leaving." Georgia whispered. Kentucky smiled before his eyes slowly shut, falling back asleep. Georgia looked down at the young soldier; strong cheekbones, a knitted brow, and scruff all over his face.
He was in love, and he had it hard.
