"PAAAAAAAPPPAAA...."

The front door slammed open and shut making Kentucky jump hard.

"IDC? Baby what's wrong?" Kentucky asked, rolling down his sleeves and going over to the twins.

"Papa, we were trying to play with some boys and one was SUPER mean to DC and LOOK!" IDC said breathlessly, pointing at her brother's leg where a deep cut rested. DC wailed as Kentucky crouched in front of him, inspecting the wound.

"I got you DeeDee." Kentucky whispered standing up. He hurried over to the kitchen table and picked up a small chestnut box. "C'mon baby, let's go over to the sofa." DC continued to wail but gave Kentucky his hand, letting him lead him over to the sofa. Kentucky sat then picked DC up, placing him on his knee. The older man grunted as he felt someone climbing up his leg, and IDC appeared on his other knee.

"Will DeeDee be okay?" IDC asked.

"Don't worry, it's only a small cut." Kentucky soothed opening up the box and pulling out a small rag and some tonic. He put some tonic on the rag and began wiping DC's cut, making the little boy whimper.

"Shh it's okay, count to ten." Kentucky offered. DC sniffed and softly began counting, mixing up some of his numbers, but reaching ten nonetheless just Kentucky finished. He placed the rag off to the side then grabbed a smaller cloth out of the box, wrapping DC's cut in quick fashion.

"Wow papa, that was amazing!" IDC said with a gasp.

"You need to learn to heal your battle wounds quickly in the army." Kentucky said with a smile as DC leaned in close to him. "Tell ya what, you grab a book Jenny and I'll read to you for awhile."

"OKAY." IDC said cheerfully, jumping off Kentucky's knee and rushing off. In no time at all she returned and climbed back on Kentucky's lap.

"This one papa! About the cheese family!" IDC announced.

"That's Swiss Family Robinson baby." Kentucky said with a smile. "But of course. Where were we?" Kentucky flipped the pages of the book, looking for their spot as IDC snuggled closer to him, taking her little brother's hand in comfort. Kentucky found where they'd last left off and started to read, unable to do the voices or make the stories as dramatic as Georgia but he powered through nonetheless hoping he was a good substitute for their dad. He didn't notice as he went on that DC buried his face in his chest and slowly fell asleep, or IDC stuck her thumb in her mouth and started to fall asleep as well, until he finished the chapter.

"While we thus regaled ourselves, I related to my wife our adventures, and then begged she would remember her promise and tell me all that had happened in my absence....babies?" Kentucky whispered looking down at the twins who were fast asleep. Kentucky marked where they were and gently put the book down next to him, bringing the two children in close. He watched them sleep; DC with his head in his chest and his hair all messy, the tear streaks still on his cheeks but still looking calm and IDC with her hair in messy braids because 'I can do it papa' sucking her thumb and clutching his shirt like he was a security blanket.

Kentucky brought the twins in close and glanced a look back at the kitchen table, knowing before dinner and curious eyes saw he'd have to get rid of what was laying across it. His arms still stung, and he cursed himself for letting himself sleep, cursed himself for having those dark thoughts, cursed himself for not being strong enough.

The tears filled his eyes as he looked down at his babies, his babies who had already lost one dad, if they lost another they'd be broken. His babies needed him, if nothing else he had to live for them, Georgia would never forgive him if he left them all alone.

DC shifted in his arms and picked his face up a little, and IDC leaned forward and was suddenly sleeping against her little brother's chest. Kentucky kissed both their heads and snuggled them close, praying that they couldn't feel the tears running down his cheeks.

"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." Kentucky whispered. "I will never leave you, I'll always be there to protect you. You're the reason I keep on living."
